Luther College Music Department Luther College’s Music Department proudly supports five choirs, three orchestras, two bands, two jazz bands, and 600 student musicians!

At Luther College, our campus is alive with the sounds of five choirs, three orchestras, two bands, two jazz bands, and over 600 student musicians. Our student musicians actively participate in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons, master classes, and many other enriching opportunities. Over 160 music majors study music theory/ear training, history, education, compositi

The Luther journey is about to begin for our newest Norse, while Timothy Peter and Charles Baldwin continue theirs. We’re excited to welcome our students and faculty back to campus!💙

In case you missed it: Charles Baldwin is Luther's new director of orchestral activities, and he grew up on campus as the son of Professor Emeritus Dan Baldwin. Tim Peter is Luther's interim director of choral activities, returning to the college where he taught from 1991 until 2012 and from which he graduated in 1986.

Congratulations to two of Luther's professors of music, Xiao Hu and Du Huang, who recently performed in China as piano soloists with the Wuhan Philharmonic Orchestra, presenting Poulenc's Double Piano Concerto and Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals. What a wonderful opportunity for these talented musicians!

The Dorian Choral Retreat brought 80 singers to Luther this past weekend, with alumni and friends from the Class of 2026 to the Class of 1968.

Under the direction of Mark Potvin ’01, Adrianna Tam, Shelly Schaeufele ’92, and Jason Rausch ’98, singers prepared and performed eight choral selections and participated in breakout sessions focused on vocal technique, church music, and music education.

Dr. Peter, a Luther alumnus and former faculty member, will also serve as interim conductor of Nordic Choir and interim artistic director of Christmas at Luther. Welcome back to Luther, Dr. Peter!👏
