You do not have to wait for G-Wiz Adventures to open to meet the herd.

Spend time with the donkeys, goats, sheep and cows, up close, with a handler who knows every one of them by name. Learn how they are fed, what they need, and why each one acts the way it does.

It works for families, birthday groups, homeschool groups, scout troops and anyone who has never stood next to a cow and wants to.

Message us to set yours up.

Animal Encounters · What a Cow Needs in a Day

What does it take to keep one cow going for one day?

Food. A 1,200 pound cow eats roughly 30 pounds of hay a day, about two and a half percent of her body weight. Every day, all year.

Water. About a gallon for every 100 pounds of body weight in cool weather, so around 12 gallons. In a Texas summer, or when she is nursing a calf, that can climb past 20 gallons a day.

Sleep. Here is the one nobody guesses. A cow only sleeps about four hours a day, and less than an hour of that is deep REM sleep. But she spends 9 to 12 hours lying down, and 7 to 10 hours chewing her cud, bringing food back up to chew it again.

Multiply all of that by every cow on the property and you start to see why feed, water and rest are the first three things a young person learns in Animal Encounters.

Thursday: meet the cows themselves.

Follow along. This is a five-phase, ten-year build and you are early.

🐮 MOO-VE OVER! IT'S TIME TO TALK ABOUT COWS! 🐄

Did you know cows are incredibly social and intelligent animals?

Cows do more than graze in the pasture. They build friendships, recognize familiar faces, and communicate with one another through body language and vocalizations.

🌿 Here are a few fun cow facts:

🐄 They have best friends! Cows form strong social bonds and often prefer spending time with certain herd members.

🐄 They have great memories! Cows can recognize familiar animals and people.

🐄 They communicate! Different vocalizations and body movements help cows express their needs and emotions.

🐄 They are naturally curious! Cows love exploring their surroundings and investigating new things.

At G-Wiz Adventures at Bison Ranch & Retreats, we believe every animal has something to teach us. Through hands-on experiences and animal education, we're creating opportunities to connect with nature, discover animal behaviors, and learn why caring for animals matters.

🐮 Next time you see a cow, remember—there's a lot more personality behind those big brown eyes than you might think!

🐐 Goats need friends, too!

Socialization isn’t just playtime for goats—it’s an important part of keeping them happy, healthy, and confident.

Goats are naturally social animals. Spending time with their herd helps them learn how to communicate, establish relationships, build confidence, and feel secure in their environment. Playing, climbing, chasing, and even a little friendly head-butting are all part of normal goat behavior.

Positive interaction with people matters, too. Regular, calm handling helps goats become more comfortable around their caregivers and makes everyday care, health checks, hoof maintenance, and other necessary handling less stressful.

At G-Wiz Adventures, animal care is about more than food and shelter. It’s about understanding what each animal needs physically, mentally, and socially.

And sometimes, what a goat needs most is another goat to play with. 🐐💛

The more you know, the more you grow.

Daily checks on the baby goats 🐐

Every day, our young farmhands help with a quick nose-to-hoof check on our little ones. We look at their eyes, peek at their gums, check their ears and look over each hoof. It only takes a few minutes, but it's one of the best ways to catch problems early and keep our herd healthy and happy. 💚

Caring for animals teaches responsibility, patience and gentle hands, and this sweet baby made it easy!

Shearing.

Shearing may look like a haircut, but for sheep, it is an important part of their care.

A heavy fleece can trap heat, moisture and debris against the skin, making it harder to keep a sheep comfortable and healthy. That is why shearing happens on a regular schedule and is done by someone who knows how to safely handle the animal throughout the process.

For our team, it was another hands-on lesson in what caring for animals actually requires—not just seeing the finished result, but understanding the why, when and how behind it.

This is the kind of learning you cannot fully get from a book. You have to see it, ask questions and experience it firsthand.

That is exactly why we are building G-Wiz Adventures.

🐐 Play is serious business when you’re a goat.

At G-Wiz Adventures, you’ll often see our goats running, jumping, climbing, chasing each other—and sometimes headbutting their friends.

But they aren’t just being silly.

Play is an important part of a goat’s physical and social development. It helps them build coordination, balance and strength while learning how to interact with the rest of the herd.

Climbing and exploring also provide enrichment, giving goats opportunities to use their natural instincts and stay active and engaged.

So when you see our goats bouncing around the pasture, remember: play is part of how they learn.

That’s your G-Wiz STEAM Fact of the Week.

The more you know, the more you grow. 🌱🐐

This week at Bison Ranch & Retreats, we’re digging into artifacts and the stories they can tell us about the past.

Artifacts are objects left behind by people who lived before us. By looking at what they were made from, how they were used, and where they were found, we can learn about the people, cultures, and communities that once called an area home.

For G-Wiz Adventures, our 35-acre learning experience within Bison Ranch, discoveries like these turn the ranch itself into a classroom. History, archaeology, science, and observation all come together when you start asking: “What is this, and how did it get here?”

Take a closer look at the objects around you. You never know what story might be hiding in plain sight.

Visit our website to stay posted, or tag us and show us what you discover.

The more you know, the more you grow.

🌾 Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Agriculture, land, and community have always been at the heart of Hispanic and Latino heritage across Texas. As we build G-Wiz Adventures on the historic Bison Ranch, we're honoring the generations of Hispanic farmers, ranchers, and agricultural workers who shaped the land we now call home and the culture we hope to pass on to the next generation of young learners.
