Resurgens Theatre Company

Resurgens Theatre Company This is neither possible nor, from our perspective, desirable.

The Resurgens Theatre Company produces the plays of Shakespeare's contemporaries (Marlowe, Jonson, Middleton, Fletcher, etc.), as well as those of the Bard, through an enhanced prosodic approach to verse-speaking. We frequently employ “original practices” as a means to augment our performative efforts; however, we do not attempt to recreate an “authentic” Renaissance experience on a twenty-first-c

entury stage. Instead, we seek to explore the complex, aesthetically charged dialogue between Elizabethan/Jacobean verse dramas and their poetic/rhetorical trans-historical resonances—to revitalize “scores for lost voices,” we would say. So, rather than offer a museum piece constructed solely to satisfy academic curiosity, we look to engender a lively artistic engagement with the present moment—a present moment filtered through the production modes of the past. And for our shows, those practices may include any or all of the following elements: audience interaction, judicious editing, minimalist staging, organic music, original pronunciation, Renaissance costuming, same-sex casting, thematic doubling, uninterrupted performances, and universal lighting.

THIS WEEK—SHAKESPEARE’S SIR THOMAS MORE. Resurgens returns this spring with a stirring early modern account of one leader’s defiant stand against mob violence and groupthink in an era of autocratic misrule. Partially penned by Shakespeare, Sir Thomas More offers both a timely and timeless drama of individual courage in the face of mass conformity. The original production was banned from the Elizabethan stage by the Master of the Revels, Edmund Tilney, because of its controversial references to insurrection. Finally, over 400 years later, Dr. Brent Griffin brings this long-suppressed work to life as part of Resurgens’ yearlong sequence of plays, “Shakespeare’s Apocrypha Now.” Show dates are Apr. 16-18 at 8:00 p.m., and Apr. 19 at 2:00 p.m. All performances will be at our new venue, the historic Pythagoras Masonic Temple (108 E. Ponce de Leon Ave.) in Decatur. For tickets and more info: www.resurgenstheatre.org.
