The Barn at Kill Creek Farm was pleased to host Bridge Church De Soto's Mexican Dinner fundraiser over the weekend for the CIY summer student conference. This would mark our 4th year supporting this special event.

It was wonderful to see so many students, parents, and community members come together, and the generosity of everyone involved was truly inspiring.

As a nonprofit event venue, we enjoy offering our space to local nonprofits and community groups whenever we can. Learn more about The Barn at Kill Creek Farm and how we serve our community: https://thebarnatkillcreekfarm.org/

Ask yourself: Are you privy to this info?

One of the most-asked questions we get at The Barn at Kill Creek Farm focuses on the smallest building on the property—the outhouse!

This small-but-necessary outbuilding was a key structure back in the day—many people have no idea that it was built in the mid- to late 1930s! Farm owner Darrel Zimmerman relocated this actual Work Projects Administration (WPA) Outhouse from a farm south of DeSoto to his farm at Kill Creek Road and K-10 in the early 2000s. Part of the move involved some restoration work, a new roof, and fresh paint.

After 25 years, the outhouse was a bit worse for wear. Four Barn board members—Jim Walker, Bob Zindler, Bob Teetsel, and Barry Zimmerman— volunteered their time and skills in 2025 to restore this latrine to its former glory—adding new siding, a new roof and a new coat of red paint. It now stands as a testament to hard work—then and now!

Work Projects Administration (WPA) Outhouse

The WPA was established during the Great Depression as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's “New Deal,” which provided jobs and improved infrastructure around the nation. While the program was best known for completing large scale projects, 2.3 million outhouses were constructed across the country to improve sanitation and public health in rural areas.

Every WPA outhouse was identical in both design and construction. They were built with a 4- x 5-foot wooden frame, a hanging roof with a 6” wide fascia board on all sides, and a ventilation chimney with a metal screen that vented polluted air outside and kept flies from coming inside. Each outhouse was constructed with a concrete foundation, floor, and vault.
