๐จ IMPORTANT UPDATE: NEW WORLD SCREWWORM (NWS) & EQUINE TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS๐จ
Horse owners planning interstate travel should be aware of new regulations related to the recent detection of New World Screwworm (NWS) in the United States.
Several states, including Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida, have established additional entry requirements for horses originating from designated areas in Texas and New Mexico where NWS concerns currently exist.
๐ด Current requirements may include the following for RENTRY to FLORIDA:
โข A Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) completed within 5 days of travel
โข Documentation confirming the horse was examined prior to travel and showed no signs of NWS infestation
โข An entry permit or authorization number issued by the destination state before arrival
โข Records of any NWS-related treatment, when applicable
๐ Why the concern?
New World Screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae infest and feed on living tissue. If not identified and treated promptly, infestations can lead to severe tissue damage, secondary infections, significant discomfort, and serious health complications.
๐ As regulatory agencies continue monitoring the situation, horse owners traveling through or into southern states may experience additional health certificate and permitting requirements. We encourage clients to plan ahead, especially when arranging interstate transport.
For our Florida clients: We can provide the health certificate needed for horses leaving the state. However, if your horse travels to or through an affected area and is returning to Florida from a designated NWS-infected zone, additional entry requirements may apply, including obtaining a new Certificate of Veterinary Inspection prior to re-entering Florida. Be sure to check current regulations before your return trip, as requirements can change quickly.
Our team is staying up to date on the latest guidance and regulatory changes. If you have upcoming travel plans with your horse, please contact us well in advance so we can help ensure all necessary documentation is in place.
We will continue sharing updates as more information becomes available.
