KARAOKE TALK #6 (MICROPHONE USE)

There is an absolute RIGHT and WRONG way to use a handheld microphone. Typical karaoke mics are directional transmitters, which means you sing directly into the top of the mic, keeping the microphone 1-2" from your mouth. This gives you the best sound with the most volume.

When singing louder and higher notes, the proper technique is to pull the mic further away from your mouth. The object is to maintain your own equal volume throughout the song. Ultimately a skilled KJ or sound person equalizes the overall sound, but as a singer, the better you control your own volume the better you sound!

Eating or cupping the mic is a NO NO!! Not only does it cause feedback at higher volumes, but it sounds horrible (am radio), and it's unsanitary! So let's keep our hands off the "capsule".

KARAOKE TALK #17 (TIPPING)

To TIP or not to tip? That is the question.

The answer is... if you are having FUN, if you're HAPPY with the KJ's personality and attitude, and you ENJOY the show... then YES!!!

The fact is that TIPPING is definitely one of the most misunderstood subjects. Many people don't even realize that tipping is customary for good service with entertainers. T.I.P.S. stands for: TO INSURE PROMPT SERVICE. That doesn't mean tip someone if they're horrible at what they do.

KJs are in fact "entertainers", just like DJs, musicians, magicians, etc. Much like bartenders and servers, we are all "service" people, and your generosity is partially how we all put food on our tables. So the next time you walk off stage feeling warm and fuzzy, show your host some LOVE!!
