The scam begins with a phone call that appears to be from a legitimate DPD phone number on the recipient’s caller ID. To add to its believability, the caller uses the name of an actual Dayton Police officer. The scammer then claims that the person on the line has an outstanding warrant for their arrest and must provide information about their bank accounts to resolve the situation.
It is crucial to remember that the DPD or any law enforcement agency will never request money, gift cards, money orders, cashier’s checks, money grams, or any other forms of payment over the phone. These requests are common tactics used by scammers to pressure and trick victims into handing over sensitive financial information. The DPD emphasizes the importance of being cautious, especially when the caller creates a sense of urgency.
