October 11 marks the anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Le***an and Gay Rights, a major demonstration for equality. The first National Coming Out Day was held exactly one year later, on October 11, 1988, to carry that momentum forward.

The idea was that visibility could help change attitudes: knowing someone who is gay—as a friend, relative, or coworker—could make prejudice harder to hold onto.

Enjoy delicious Hispanic food, Latin music, mingle with local vendors and community partners, and enjoy a special showing of a traditional Novela that addresses HIV stigma and the use of PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) by Reach LA: “El Chakal de Mi Corazón.” Free rapid HIV testing will also be provided by Golden Rule Services, so come and enjoy!

Pedro Zamora, a Cuban-American, was one of the first openly gay men with HIV/AIDS to be portrayed in popular media through his role on MTV's reality television series The Real World: San Francisco in 1994. Through this role, he brought international attention to HIV/AIDS issues and became an AIDS educator and activist.

He was credited by U.S. President at the time, Bill Clinton, for humanizing people living with HIV through Pedro's activism, which also included a testimony before Congress. Pedro’s work was tragically cut short when he died of an AIDS-related illness in 1994, the morning after the final episode of The Real World: San Francisco aired.

In his honor, the National AIDS Memorial created the Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship, which spotlights and supports young leaders who carry the torch of activists like Pedro and mitigate the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
