Barnyard Theatre

Barnyard Theatre Out here, theatre begins with a summer sunset and ends under the country stars... The Hunt family generously offered to host us in the Historic Schmeiser Barn.

Barnyard Theatre's founding members met and began working together at Davis High School. After returning home from college for our summer break, we decided it would be fun to continue our theatrical hi-jinks. And so, in 2004, undaunted by dust and mosquitoes, we launched our inaugural production of My Avisia Winger - an original piece by one of our founders, Brian Oglesby. Since then, we have prod

uced a wide variety of original works. In 2006, we began the Nights of New Plays Festival. This festival focuses on developing and showcasing original scripts, which we often produce on the main stage in later years. In 2008, Barnyard Theatre incorporated as a non-profit. Throughout our history, we have partnered with Charlie Hunt and the UC Davis Friends of Acoustic Music to present the Barnyard Music Festival. The company continues to grow and evolve. Each year, we have fun transforming the barn into a wide variety of performance spaces. We love sharing the beautiful summer sunsets and brand new plays with our audiences.

2011, and it's an intense, week-long festival with two movie showings (and a princess party), a night of short plays, a workshop of a new play, a performed reading of a new play, and a fully produced reading of NAHAR by John Johnson. A door bleeds, and there's a working refrigerator onstage.

2010, and we celebrate the short play, fully producing Brenda Varda's THINGS THAT FALL FROM THE SKY, Eva Konstantopoulos's FLY ME TO THE MOON, and Rob Rinow's UNUSUAL EPITAPHS. These three plays are directed by Lindsay Carpenter, and start outside with a truck driving up to a tree, then bring us into the barn with so many glorious red balloons. Finally, we witness astronauts fall to earth from the rafters.

2007, Barnyard moves outdoors with Brecht's GALILEO. Barnyardians (led by Anthony Pinto) build a turntable stage and an octagonal lighting grid so the audience can watch the play under the stars. Rain during tech week is unable to prevent the gorgeous set from being painted.

In 2006, we begin our tradition of the Nights of New Plays, evenings that workshop and showcase new work by playwrights. In 2008, the Nights of New Plays takes over the mainstage. Later, we do readings of new work at the Pence Gallery.

2006, A FLAG TOUCHED THE GROUND by Nicholas Walker Herbert transforms the barn. We build a massive wood revolve and put the audience on it - and we hang a c*c on the other side. The revolve mirrors Thorlock's journey.
