A thoughtful reflection on the magic of Christmas. Love this!

When I was a kid, we’d set up the tree. We’d cover it in ornaments hanging on by hot glue and a prayer. We’d cover the tree in tacky tinsel. My parents would start their annual argument whether it was the year for garland or no garland.

When I was a kid, we’d bake cookies on Christmas Eve. We’d slathered angels and snowmen in too much homemade icing that no one really liked to eat. We’d write a letter to the Santa we knew wasn’t real and make our requests. Our final request was always “world peace.”

When I was a kid, my sisters and I would sleep in one room on Christmas Eve. We crawled into old sleeping bags on the floor, the air we breathed thick with anticipation. I’d squeeze my eyes shut and will sleep to come.

When I was a kid, we’d wait for my dad to come get us on Christmas morning. He’d soberly tell us Santa didn’t come because we were bad. We’d laugh and line up to walk down the stairs to open our stockings. There was always gum. Then came the presents. Always opened from youngest to oldest.

When I was a kid, Christmas was magical.

But where was the magic? Was it in the homemade ornaments? Or the sleeping bags with holes? Was it in the gum or the presents or cookies no one ate?

I don’t think the magic was any one thing, but the sum of it all. The magic of tradition is not the thing itself, but the sense of identity and belonging it brings. It is the way it says to a child, “This is us and you are a part of this ‘us’. You are wrapped up and held and claimed.”

I think we stress too much about “making” Christmas magic like it’s some kind of exact recipe we’re scared to botch. Magic isn’t made. It’s born. It’s born of a thousand little, insignificant things we choose to tie us all together.

The magic comes from knowing you belong to people . . . and they belong to you.

So true - for all dancers. Beautiful ballet dancing - not just pointe - is hard work! But a rewarding achievement!

"I think most people don't really understand all that it takes to stand on your toes and to be able to jump and land without any noise, or for a male dancer to be able to lift a girl. All of these things look so effortless, but there's an attention to detail and years of training, as well as being able to transform into a character and being able to meld all of those things together."

Here is a simple exercise to feel and develop turnout muscles:

1) Sit on the floor with your legs in second. This does not need to be a big split stretch. Make sure your back is upright and that you have a neutral pelvis, meaning use your core and do not lean forward.

2) Straighten your knees and flex your feet.

3) Turn out your legs so the tops of your quads, knees, and feet face the wall behind you to the best of your ability. Monitor yourself to make sure you don't roll forward from your hips.

4) Hold for 10 seconds. Relax for 10 seconds. Repeat three more times.
