Just now getting some time to do a bit of editing and going through all of the images I took several weeks ago on Dauphin Island. It was an amazing night out, clear skies and low humidity and above all else no moon out. I also had a little fox follow me for about an hour, very curious or he was just a camera hog.

Nikon D800, 15mm .8, 20 seconds, ISO 4000

This image was taken just as you enter the Bird Sanctuary from the East End beach. The streaks you see in the image are from satellites orbiting the earth. Right after sunset if you watch the sky you can see them as they reflect sunlight.

The second image is straight out of the camera with lens correction only. The third and fourth image is of the little camera hog ...

The Hidden Path ...
A few weeks ago I headed back out to the Dauphin Island to get some MilkyWay shots. Even though it was so dark in the woods that I couldn't see my hand in front of my face I did a bit more exploring through some of the trails. I came across the path that goes through the swamp area and it lined up perfectly with the MilkyWay. I shot the MilkyWay at 15mm, F2.8, 30 seconds, ISO 4000. I shot the foreground with the same setting but at 5 Minutes at 1000 ISO.

And yes it was a bit creepy sitting there quietly for 15 minutes or so wondering if a gator has you in their sites. But worht it though. :-)

Well the past couple of weeks has not played out well. A lot of clouds at night and now the moon is out so I decided to go back to my previous shoot. I missed this one the first go around. Taken on the East end of Dauphin Island.

Best Seat In The Galaxy ...

I forgot to post this here on Facebook. Me and Tricia were able to make it to the Florida panhandle. Wow has it changed over the years. I remember driving along the coast when I was younger with wide-open areas that had beach access and now there is nothing but condos. We did find a public area in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida Which turned out great. Something that I do love about Florida is that there are no oil or gas rigs off the coast, nothing but dark skies.

Typically on Dauphin Island my settings are 30 seconds at ISO 4000. In Santa Rosa I was able to shoot at 30 Seconds at ISO 1200 .... I was shocked !!

Dreamy ..

The final of the series was taken on the East end of Dauphin Island. It was taken in 2 parts. The sky was developed from 4 long exposures, and stacked to reduce noise.

Nikon D800, f2.8, 15mm, 30sec, ISO 4000

The foreground was a much longer exposure of 3 minutes, at ISO 800.

Then the 2 parts were blended together in Photoshop.

The fourth of the series was taken on the East end of Dauphin Island south of the bird sanctuary. It was taken in 2 parts. The sky was developed from a single long exposure.

Nikon D800, f2.8, 15mm, 30sec, ISO 4000

The foreground was a longer exposure of

Nikon D800, f2.8, 15mm, 2 minutes, ISO 1000

The third of the series was taken on the East end of Dauphin Island and many locals may recognise the location. I am saving the 2 best images for last.

This was taken in 2 parts. The sky was developed from 2 images stacked for noise reduction.

Nikon D800, f2.8, 15mm, 30sec, ISO 4000

The foreground was my longest exposure of the night as I really wanted to smooth the waves out.

Nikon D800, f2.8, 15mm, 5 minutes, ISO 600

Then the sky and foreground were blended together in Photoshop.

I spent about 5 hours taking a number of pictures of the Milky Way and doing some experimenting with exposure vs ISO vs f-stop on Dauphin Island.

So stay tuned this week as I post the images and give a bit of information about each one.

The second of the series was taken in 2 parts. The sky was the first part as a single image.

Nikon D800, f2.8, 15mm, 30sec, ISO 4000

I would have loved to have taken multiple and stacked but the waves kept moving my camera.

The foreground was taken at:

Nikon D800, f2.8, 15mm, 2minutes, ISO 1000

Then the 2 parts were blended together in Photoshop.

I finally had some free time and some nice clear weather for a chance and was able to get out and really take my time and shoot. It was hot, muggy out at the island but the skies were pretty clear. Clear enough to get some decent shots. I spent about 5 hours taking a number of pictures of the Milky Way and doing some experimenting with exposure vs ISO vs f-stop.

Stay tuned this week as I post the images and give a bit of information about each one.

The first of the series is taken right after the Milky Way rose high enough over the light pollution to get a clean shot.

Nikon D800, f2.8, 15mm, 30sec, ISO 4000

I took 9 shots in a sequence without moving the camera. I then used those images and a piece of software called
Sequator. Sequator stacks and aligns the stars which attempts to remove the long exposure noise. It took a bit to get the settings just right but the results are really nice.

Stay tuned because I was also able to develop a process of removing noise with a single image.

I used Photoshop and Lightroom to enhance the colors and contrast of the Milky Way.

Final Image and then the original out of the camera ..

Brilliance ...

Taken several weeks ago and I didn't even know I had captured it. This was taken looking north of Mobile, AL from the causeway. This was a very small cell with only a few decent lightning strikes.
