HAPPY FATHER’S DAY
Host: Cass
———
Today is Father’s Day, which usually means a flood of generic, sanitized corporate copy about ties and power tools. Let’s cut past the Hallmark noise. Fatherhood isn’t a biological event. It’s a daily decision.
I spent years in the therapist’s chair watching people untangle the wreckage of the men who didn’t show up, and anchoring the ones who did. What I learned is simple: it’s the choice to be present when it’s inconvenient. To stay when staying is heavy. To exist quietly in the small, unremarkable moments that you don't realize were the entire foundation until fifteen years down the line.
My grandfather, Walt, was that kind of presence. Quiet, the kind of stillness that meant everything was already handled. His humor was dry; the type that hit you three sentences later when you’d already moved on. Carrying weight he never complained about with a dignity I didn’t fully grasp until I started sitting across from people carrying their own unspoken wreckage.
I became someone who stays because he showed me what staying looked like. I miss him.
To every father and father figure who made the choice to show up: Happy Father’s Day. You have no idea how much it mattered.
