Fifty Seven years ago today the world woke up to the very sad news that the “World’s Greatest Entertainer” had passed away.

All too young and all too soon.

The fact of the matter is that Judy Garland accomplished more in 47 years on earth than most people do in 80 or 90. The legacy that she has left behind on film and in her recordings is insurmountable.

A wise biographer once said, “People will tell you that she “married more than once, she had an addiction to prescription drugs and she died young”. Well, there are many people who have married more than once, had an addiction of some kind and died young but bless them, that is all that they did with their lives. The same cannot be said about Judy Garland”.

57 years after her death she continues to transcend time and reach out and touch and inspire generation after generation.

We mourn the loss today. But even more important we should also celebrate the incredible life and legacy of a remarkable talent and human being.

Do not look upon today as the anniversary of her death. Rather the “Angelversary” of her life.

In the final analysis it is not how one died that matters but how they lived. And for all the tears, Judy’s was also a life of great love and alot of laughter.

This song, which she sang on her last public television appearance, almost one year before her passing, truly sums up her legacy with audiences past, present and future.

It’s all for you, Judy ❤️🌈🌈 ❤️

A salute to to Judy’s dad, Frank Gumm, on Father’s Day.

She always spoke warmly about her father. Crediting him with her vocal prowess and infectious laugh.

His untimely death shortly after signing on with MGM and just before the holidays, left a huge void in her life. She felt she had lost the one person who was on her side.

Peter Mac channels Judy Garland. It’s clear that Peter Mac is the tribute artist that even Garland would hire. Mac has absorbed Garland . He goes beyond superficial mimicry, though; he's got Garland in his nasolabial folds. His wigs and costumes are great, and his range matches 1960s-Garland's very well. What sells the show is his warmth and charm- Holly Van Leuven,WBUR

I would never let the birthday of Anne Frank pass without mention. And it is still June 12th somewhere.

Anne would have been 97 years old today. At least one of her childhood is still with us. But slowly we are losing all of them.

Words cannot express the profound impact reading “Anne Frank: The Diary of A Young Girl” had on me as a teenager.

It is a book that I go back to once a year. What is truly horrifying is to read it and see how history sadly does repeat itself.

When I toured the East Coast in “Anne Frank: Voice Heard” as “Peter Van Pels” it was one of the great thrills of my career. But every day that I donned my winter coat with the “yellow star” asfixed to it, I always got a chill. My stomach would drop slightly.

Currently we are in talks to mount my one act piece, “Saving Anne Frank: The Miep Gies Story” this summer. It has been six years in the making. We need more Miep’s now. Believe you me.

Happy heavenly Birthday, Annelise Marie Frank.

Your death was not in vain. Your words continue to inspire and to educate.

“When I think for such a young life to be taken and with really no reason! Had she lived what a real contribution that she could have given to the world” Hannah Gossolar, Anne’s friend and survivor of Bergen Belsen camp.

104 years ago today, God decided that the world needed more joy. So we were given Judy Garland, née “Frances Ethel Gumm”.

It is inconceivable to even think of a world without Judy Garland in it.

If all she ever did was “The Wizard of Oz”, what a contribution that would have been. However, Judy is much more than a pair of red sequin shoes and a blue gingham dress.

Perhaps a note left on lush bouquet of flowers, when she was guest starring on the Merv Griffin Show, said it best:

“You are the greatest symbol of love for youth today!”

That holds up just as much now as it did in 1968.

Happy Birthday, Miss Garland. Thank you for the decades of love and LAUGHTER you have given to millions of people the world over.

The enclosed video is of her singing her favorite song of all time. Appropriate on her birthday.

It is astounding that vampires are now flying around Judy’s historic Palace theatre. Even garnering Tony Awards. Pretty cool. I believe that she would get a huge kick out of that.

You know, Judy Garland and one particular vampire played a very important part in my formative years.

In 2005, I was sitting in the Candlelight room of the Hideaway Cabaret in Chelsea, Manhattan where I was performing as Judy.

Having a late dinner with author, Craig Hamrick. Craig wrote the fantabulous book, “Barnabas and Company”.

Craig had been to see the show several times and had taken some publicity shots for us and video for our reel.

We were talking about how we both got involved in “Dark Shadows” fandom. How it helped me escape what was going on at home and at school.

I had also been writing comedic one acts for the annual DS conventions for about nine years at that point.

“Do something with this. You’ve got a story to tell. I know you do! What about a show?Tell your story. How about this for a title, “Me and My Dark Shadows”. *If ya know, ya know. This was a wink and nod to Lorna Luft.

The idea inspired Craig so much that he eventually had “Dark Shadows” star, Nancy Barrett guest star with “Judy” for six weeks and both worlds collided.

Fade out, fade in.

One cozy night in Topanga Canyon, we were having a lovely evening with our friend, Lamar. Better known as Lara Parker. “Angelique” on ABC’s cult classic soap opera.

Lamar had seen me as Judy but she had never seen my autobiographical play, “Judy and Me” We had just signed the deal to transfer the play directly off Broadway.

“So Judy Garland saved your life?”

“Two things got me through my adolescence, Lamar. Judy Garland and “Dark Shadows.”

She laughed that delicious laugh so unique to her.

“That’s a pretty large chasm, Peter. But I get it. I love it! Tell me more!”

“Barnabas and you and Quentin. You guys were the outcasts but you were the cool kids. You know what I mean?”

We talked about Craig and his advice.

“Well, I agree. Craig was right. So where’s that story? That’s a really fascinating dichotomy. You’ve told the Judy side of it. I would really like to see that show”Barnabas and Me”.

So with Craig and Lara’s encouragement, love, input…

“Barnabas and Me and My Dark Shadows” A Cabaret has been born. In honor of the shows 60th anniversary.

Stay tuned!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

This sums up my childhood, my adolescence and has even informed my adult years. Am I an adult? Matter of opinion 😉

Truly though, she was (is and always will be) a very bright light in the extremely dark world that I was living in.

It is a magical moment when you find you have a friend in “Dorothy”.

Happy Birthday, Mommy. My mom, Camille.

Wish you were here.

You would be 78 years old and you would absolutely kill me for saying it lol

“When I’m old I’ll let ya know! I’ll take out a big two page ad in the New York Times!”

Wish you were here to celebrate it with us. Not fair.

I know you were around tonight. Have a feeling it was you with a little help from Doreen and Lamar. Otherwise I never could have jumped that hurdle.

Hope that you’re celebrating with Grams and Gramps, Uncle Charlie, Binx, Gellie, Josie, Thelly…and Judy.

I love you ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Happy Birthday in heaven.

A very happy and heavenly birthday to fabulous, John Meyer.

Johnny was briefly engaged to Judy in 1968. It was his wonderful compositions that you heard her sing on television in that time frame.

In particular, the haunting, “After The Holidays” and the glorious, “It’s All For You”. Which Johnny could not have known was the lady herself summing up her enduring marriage to her audiences…just seven months before her untimely passing.

It was an absolute thrill and delight to finally perform for Johnny in 2018 and 2019. And that included all the songs he wrote for Judy, as well as in memory of her. We also had two lovely dinners together.

He was tickled when I told him that as a 13 year old, I “swiped” his (then out of print) memoir about Judy from our local library. “Now that’s commitment, Peter!”

Having his stamp of approval meant on my work the world to me. Remember, he knew Judy in every sense. Including “Biblically”.

Happy Birthday, dear man.

Johnny’s review:

“His singing was excellent-and his stories were marvelously funny! Peter's evocation of Judy is spot on, down to the little halting, back-and-forth steps, the self-hug, and, of course the mic-slung-over-the shoulder. It is almost as if he has channeled Judy. the quips and anecdotes make a smooth and amusing transition between numbers.

The audience last night gave him a rapturous standing ovation -basically for Peter's obvious and total commitment. Needless to say, I was moved”-John A. Meyer, Composer, Author, Playwright
