A few turnings, mostly utensils for fairs and markets. An oak succulent pot, sealed inside with penetrating marine resin and a covered ring bowl, live edge with moss preserved with thin shellac.

Not a lot of time in the studio the last couple weeks due to other tasks and so forth. I have done some spindle work, Fisherman's Billies and kitchen utensils. Woods used are Slippery Elm, Chinese Elm, and Mulberry. Have you ever tried to land a 36 inch Northern Pike from a canoe? That's when a fisherman's billie is handy. These are ballasted at the ends and reinforced in the handles with steel rod. Lanyards may be added later.

I recently received four requests for billie clubs with ballast. Species is unknown dense hardwood with straight grain. It is about 11 inches in length with 3/4 inch by 2 inch steel rod the club and 5/16 steel rod the length of the handle.

This pencil cup is for my nephew, engineer extraordinaire and overall scientific sort of guy. It is Chinese Elm (I think). Live edge with moss, preserved with thin, penetrating shellac. The color is obtained by treating the wood with tannic acid followed by iron sulfate (or iron acetate). This is basically the process of making iron gall ink only the reaction occurs in the pores of the wood. The grain texture of the bare wood is almost invisible but really pops with the treatment. Iron sulfate is easy to make: Dissolve iron filings in a weakish (for safety) sulfuric acid. Tannic acid reagent is readily available; just mix with distilled water to desired concentration. If using white oak, no additional tannic acid is needed.

A kitchen set of three utensils: spoon, spatuloon and angled spatula in an oak holder. The oak had speckled dry rot and nice chatoyance. To bring out the softer portions, I used Iron acetate before final sanding for a nice contrast. The utensils are of one of the Elm cousins, maybe Chinese?? Nice straight grain and hard.

Using cutoffs, not wanting to waste any of some wonderfully aromatic and beautiful cedar, I turned these three small pieces. This cedar has been a joy to turn.

Most interesting weekend project: Turned this cedar bowl this weekend. I loved the color and texture patters in this wood. Thanks Tim, for dropping it by to work on. The challenges lay in stabilizing it due to many, many checks and cracks and a lot of movement in the wood as I turned it. Jury is out whether it will move more and potentially crack over time.

I received this wood from Tim; thanks Tim. I don't know the specific species, but it may be one of the Elm cousins. The wood was very dense and hard requiring more than typical sharpening of tools. Due to a cavity in the piece, I used a black resin fill to keep it together. It has some very nice chatoyance and figure.
