Many of you know we recently lost some of surfingโ€™s greatest pioneers. With each passing, we lose another voice from a generation that helped shape an extraordinary culture and deeper connection to the ocean.

Their stories deserve to live on.

Behind that history are remarkable individuals whose creativity, craftsmanship, and passion for the ocean and surfing transformed a pastime into a global phenomenon.

Few embody that legacy quite like Rich Harbour.

In 1959, at just 16 years old, Harbour began shaping surfboards in his parentsโ€™ garage. What followed was a remarkable journey that helped define generations of surfing, building Harbour Surfboards in Seal Beach into one of the most enduring institutions in surf history.

๐ŸŽฌ ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—–๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€, directed by Chris Sardelis, is a deeply personal, 13-year journey into the life and extraordinary influence of this Southern California icon. Through rare archival imagery, intimate interviews, and the voices of surfing legends, the film captures a bygone era and the community that helped shape the soul of surfing.

Sometimes when youโ€™re marketing a film festival, you find yourself bending into a pretzel trying to connect the dots and tell a good story. But with the Dana Point Film Festival, the connections are so organic you really couldnโ€™t make them up.

In Dana Point, back in the late โ€™50s, John Severson was making surf films like ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ณ (1958) and ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ณ ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ (1959), traveling up and down the coast screening his movies to packed audiences.

While putting together his next film, ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ณ ๐—™๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ (1960), he came up with an idea for a little promotional booklet, which he laid out on the floor of his Dana Point apartment, printed 10,000 copies of, and called ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ.

That little 36-page booklet eventually became SURFER magazine, one of the most influential voices in surfing history.

So when we talk about the connection between Dana Point, surf filmmaking, and SURFER, weโ€™re not stretching to find a story here. Itโ€™s literally where it all began, and we couldnโ€™t be more excited to announce our new partnership with SURFER and SURFER TV.
