Happy Birthday!

50 years ago today, on August 26,1970, Jimi Hendrix opened the first artist-owned recording facility in the world. He called it “Electric Lady Studios.”

In the weeks prior, he had tested his new studio with engineer Eddie Kramer, recording songs such as Freedom, Angel, Dolly Dagger, and more. Having deemed it ready, the doors opened — and they have remained open for exactly five decades today.

The image shown here was used for the official invitation to the studio’s opening night — an image of Jimi’s close friend Paulette Marron holding her first born daughter. When Jimi saw the photograph from which the image came, he immediately decided that it exactly represented what “Electric Lady” meant to him; she was nurturing, a protector of the vulnerable, and had beauty beyond compare - a refuge that creatives could wander to and flourish.

Today, in spite of the pandemic, political fatigue, and social unrest surrounding us all, we pause to celebrate Electric Lady’s history and the community of people that gather here and grow.
