A closer look at Pandemical Drawings by Pamela Diaz Martinez. 🤍

While Pamela was visiting the studio, we spent some time chatting about a few of the works in her current exhibition. I’m excited to share these short conversations with you over the next few weeks, highlighting individual pieces and the stories, reflections, and meaning behind them.

In this first video, I ask Pamela a few questions about No. 40: What Our Lord Saw from the Cross (Revised), offering a glimpse into her perspective and the personal significance of the work.

Tonight at Hope Lodge was one of those nights I know I’ll carry with me for a very long time.

I had the honor of teaching a Make a Mug class for patients, caregivers, and families at Hope Lodge, and there was so much more to tonight than simply making pottery.

We spent three hours creating together, working with our hands, talking, laughing, sharing stories, and for a little while, allowing ourselves to simply be present. Several people told me how much this experience meant to them. Some called it therapy. Others thanked me over and over and shared how grateful they were to have a few hours where they could create something and connect with others who understand this season of life.

And then came cleanup.

After a three-hour class, it took us about an hour to clean everything up and I certainly didn’t do it alone. Other caregivers and even a couple of patients stayed behind, helping wash, wipe down tables, put things away, and clean up while we continued talking and visiting. Honestly, that part was just as special as the class itself.

So many hands went into making tonight possible, and I want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who donated, encouraged this project, helped provide supplies, and helped us clean up tonight. This experience truly took a community.

There is still more work to come. These mugs will be glazed and fired by the incredibly generous art department at Lee University, and I’m so grateful for their willingness to help bring this project all the way to completion.

I don’t take this opportunity lightly. To be able to share something I love with people walking through such a difficult season and to watch art become a place for connection, rest, conversation, and even a little healing, is an incredible privilege.

Tonight reminded me that sometimes creating something with our hands gives our hearts a little room to breathe.

Studio Update ✨

The studio and gallery will be closed this week while I’m in Nashville caring for my mom.

For those who have been following along, she is doing well and continues to meet the goals her doctors have set for her. We are incredibly grateful for that. She is still in a season of recovery, though, and currently requires a 24-hour caregiver, so our family continues to take turns being with her in Nashville.

As much as I love being in the studio, there are times when family needs to come first, and I’m grateful for the flexibility to step away when needed. Thank you for continuing to give me grace and support as I navigate this season while also caring for this little creative community we’ve built together.

While I’m in Nashville, I’ll also be bringing our Make a Mug experience to the Hope Lodge, offering a free pottery experience for patients, caregivers, and families staying there. This class has been made possible in part by a generous donation of clay from the Art Department at Lee University. 🤍

The classes I’ve been hosting are 100% free, and I’m honored to donate my time, instruction, and materials to provide a little space for creativity, connection, and joy during what can be an incredibly difficult season for so many families.

So, although the physical studio will be closed this week, I’ll still be doing something I love, spreading the joy of creating. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to give back to such a special organization and to share something that has brought so much joy to my own life with others.

The studio will be open by appointment the week of October 12, with the exception of Monday, October 12, when we will be closed for the federal holiday.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support. It truly means more than you know. 🤍

🫖✨ Make a Fruit Basket: Pottery Workshop

Create something beautiful for your home in this special 3-hour pottery workshop at Victoria Phillips Studio & Gallery in Dalton, GA!

On Saturday, October 24 from 10 AM–1 PM, we’ll spend the morning working with beautiful speckled stoneware to hand-build a functional ceramic fruit basket using slab-building techniques.

I’ll guide you step-by-step through the process as we explore how to build a larger functional form with confidence. You’ll also choose your glaze color during class, making your finished piece completely your own. 🤍

After class, I’ll take care of the rest! Your basket will be bisque fired, glazed with a food-safe glaze, and glaze fired to cone 5–6. Once finished, it will be microwave and dishwasher safe and ready to use in your kitchen for years to come.

✨ Pamela Martinez | October 2–31

I’m so excited to welcome Mexican-American artist Pamela Martinez to Victoria Phillips Studio & Gallery for an exhibition presented during Hispanic Heritage Month.

Pamela’s drawings were created through the practice of translating Scripture into visual form, a process that became a deeply personal practice of faith, reflection, and healing. Her work explores her relationship with Scripture and Jesus with honesty, intimacy, and a sense of humor.

The exhibition opens Friday, October 2, with an Opening Reception from 6–8 PM, and will remain on view through October 31.

Pamela will also be sharing her current work and her upcoming short film, which releases October 2.
