When Kim and I started KD Studio nearly 45 years ago, our sole objective was to provide working actors in Dallas with a place to hone their skills. Shortly thereafter, we recognized a greater need and expanded our course offerings to include introductory level and children’s classes, then a few years later we added degree granting classes for actors and filmmakers.
I’m excited to share that in November 2022, KD Conservatory was named the #1 Film School in Texas by Best Value Schools Org. (bestvalueschool.org). The greatest reward, however, has been in watching graduates succeed in front of the camera and behind the scenes in film, television, and theater. Others have experienced success outside the entertainment industry, many of whom credit the skills they acquired at KD Studio with giving them the tools to connect with clients and grow successful businesses.
Throughout the years we have also witnessed other benefits of theater training and today I am pleased to share information with you on a unique class that we are offering through KD Studio’s non-profit partner, Trinity River Arts Center. This class, “Social Skills on the Stage,” is designed to assist young people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) develop communication skills and practice social interactions through theater games and exercises. Dr. Michael Schraeder, director of KD Conservatory and Sarah Rutan a member of our faculty, developed the curriculum which integrates traditional acting training with specialized instruction for non-traditional learners. This program was successfully piloted at KD Studio and has been replicated by Seattle Repertory Theatre’s education outreach program.
Offering these classes through Trinity River Arts Center allows us to seek contributions that will provide scholarships to young people who will benefit greatly from this training. We are offering this class at a reduced cost of $400 per student for eight weeks of training and hope you will join me in supporting this program by including Trinity River Arts Center in your charitable giving.
Please feel free to contact Dr. Michael Schraeder at 214-638-0484 or [email protected] if you would like any additional information on this program.
Sincerely,
Kathy Tyner
