St. Tropez, 2024. by .

“Brigitte Bardot loved using her Albatross speedboat in St. Tropez, and we realized that if we could source a vintage one, it would make a perfect prop for this parody, reflecting both the era and the location. We managed to find one, but it had to be shipped all the way from Goodwood in the UK.

The buildings in La Ponche have a weathered, timeless quality that I knew would serve the shoot well. All I needed then was a composition that would convey a sense of place and capture the essence of a very specific woman. Nadine Leopold, with her breezy nonchalance, was ideal for the role. We both understood that the right head angles could offer a sense of anonymity. Having worked with Nadine before, I knew she would be a delight to collaborate with.

It’s not easy to make someone look like someone else, especially in a way that doesn’t come off as cheap or gratuitous. My instinct was to photograph her out of the boat, as it would give us more freedom to craft a broader narrative, even incorporating some determined paparazzi on the shore.

The aluminium hull of the boat created useful reflections when facing the rising sun, and as this detail began to emerge, I adapted my plans and adjusted Nadine’s position. It’s always best not to be too prescriptive.

Ultimately, the goal was to capture an image with a clear sense of place and time. This is St. Tropez—the most idyllic and storied resort in the world, the place that Bardot called home.” -
