 I remember this day, 9/11/2001

I was a CPS investigator in my 4th year and second stint as a DFPS caseworker.

I remember our close nit unit huddled around a tv monitor mounted on the wall in the lobby and we watched in horror as this tragic series of attacks occurred..

We had a lobby full of nervous parents waiting to have supervised visits with their children, tearful job applicants there to interview and other office colleagues from down the hall.
We comforted and consoled each other.

There was no judgment. No one worried about anybody status or condition. We were just … ONE.

When the lobby cleared we closed for the day and I sat at my desk and wrote this poem.

I wrote as if I were someone stuck in the rubble struggling to hang on as i listened to the firemen trying to reach me.

A Tribute to the Men and Women who lost their lives.
By Michael Guinn (From The Book Cryjng In Colors) ……

Hello Down There…..

Out from the darkness you called to me as you crawled to me
Scratching a path of sadness with numb thumbs as night ran from the dawn.
Deep down inside.. I waited for you to come.

I heard you fiercely digging and I prayed with my last breath for you to HURRY SAVE ME. PLEASE!!

But as misery moaned, despair screamed. Granite and stone ground bone as twisted beams crushed dreams and all I WANTED? Was to simply go home!

Tired and weary my heart grew from the wait, Wondering when and what would be my fate.

I watched the reaper grim, grin his reply, this was not the way I wanted to die.
But the air grew thin, chills moved like wind. Fear shattered hope from the tremble within
There was hardly any light, I could barely cope. As walls around me collapsed so did my hopes.

Still, I heard you digging, with all your might! I HEARD YOU… working night, day and night.
I tried to hold on, I tried to fight, but my spirit, weakened, crawled towards the light..

And you may not have known this at the time, but I listen as you cried out to my trembling shadow. You may not have known this then but a part of me felt you lift my lifeless bocy and for a second, my soul smiled.

You may never know how it felt when you your hands gently closed my eyes or how warm your tears felt to my soul. And I begged JESUS….TO PLEASE … LET ME SPEAK !

And even though it was too late to save my broken body … I wanted to thank you for allowing my spirit to be released from the rocks and bricks that bound me.

And as my spirit fled that moment, I wanted to thank you for the songs you sang as night fell. Because sifting through mud and blood must have surely been hell. As you searched debris with only nightmares to tell.

It’s ok … don’t cry … I have to go now. But I just wanted you to know that when I get to heaven, I’ll ask God to appoint me as your guardian angel. I just wanted you to know that! And on that day … I’ll be watching and waiting to give you the handshake and hug life denied me. So until then take care my fire fighting friend and I’ll see you soon ….. SOMEWHERE UP THERE !
