The Clean House

A comedy about loss, love, change and redemption, The Clean House is both whimsical and touching. A serious career-oriented doctor, Lane, has hired a quirky Brazilian maid. The only problem is that the maid, Matilde, hates to clean. Instead, she longs to be a comedienne. Lane is deserted by her husband, Charles, who leaves her for Ana, a passionate, older Brazilian woman upon whom he recently performed a mastectomy. Sarah Ruhl's enchanting play reminds us that there is humor and beauty to be find in life's most unlikely messes.

MATILDE, Lane's cleaning lady, a woman in her late twenties. She wears black. She is Brazilian. She has a refined sense of deadpan.

CHARLES, Lane's husband, a man in his fifties. A compassionate surgeon. He is childlike underneath his white coat. In the first act, Charles plays Matilde's father.

ANA, (50s-70s) a woman who is older than Lane. She is Argentinean. She is impossibly charismatic. In the first act she plays Matilde's mother.

NOTE: Everyone in this play should be able to tell a really good joke.

LANE & VIRGINIA have been cast

When punk rock exploded in L.A., Sally and Lou were there: feminists, Latinas, queens of noise. One went pop, one stayed punk, but sparks from their tumultuous friendship remain. Decades later, they try overcome old wounds, forgive each other, and rock as hard as they ever did.

SALLY - Punk rock girl. Androgynous. Would be great if she could shred the guitar.
16-26, Latinx, Woman

SLADE (CAST) - Sally, older. Still angry. Still punk. Joan Jett type. Great if she can shred a guitar.
40s-50s, Latinx, Woman

LULU - Very pretty. Ambitious. feminist.
16-26, Woman, Latinx (white passing)

LUISA - Lulu, older. A rock icon. Steely, icy. Lovely. Linda Ronstadt type.
40s-50s, Woman, Latinx (white passing)

KADY- Luisa’s pretty, complicated and ambitious teen age daughter.
Teens - 20s, multi-racial, Woman

NIGEL - Ageless. British or pretends to be. Punk rock royalty at least in his own mind. Dying of liver cancer. Can be cast from Bowie to Prince and everything in between.
30-70, any ethnicity, Man, Non-Binary

All positions will be paid a $75 stipend.

🐇 Major props to somebunny on the creative team we want to shout out: Dashi Overland ()! 🐰 You may recognize these adorable (and somewhat tragic) dead rabbits from You Must Wear a Hat – now meet their maker! 🧵🪡 Dashi is an incredibly talented maker of dolls, doll clothes, and doll accessories, and he was a huge part of bringing a little extra pride to our prop table with these handmade rabbits. 🏳️‍⚧️ 💛🤍💜🖤
If you love them as much as we do, we’ve got great news – you can buy a miniature pin or magnet version of them in the lobby! 🧷 Support trans art in DFW and show a little extra pride with one of these accessory-sized bunnies! 🐇
You’ve only got a few more shows left to see Dashi’s craftsmanship onstage, so be sure to catch You Must Wear a Hat by C Meaker at the Bath House Cultural Center () today, tomorrow, or Saturday! 🎩🪸🐇
