PDNB Gallery PDNB Gallery (Photographs Do Not Bend) specializes in fine art
photography and photo-based art. The gallery also exhibits emerging artist.

Since opening in Dallas in 1995, the gallery has exhibited photography from the early 20th Century to present, covering Photo-Secession, Modernism, Documentary, New Topographics, Photojournalism and Conceptual Art. Exhibits have also included painting, works on paper and sculpture. Most artist exhibited are established and included in major museum collections. Exhibitions rotate every six to eight weeks. PDNB Gallery has been a member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) since 1996.

Seeing Together: Photography through Language and the Senses
A conversation between photographer / filmmaker Neal Slavin and artist / author M. Leona Godin

Neal Slavin and M. Leona Godin will explore the phenomenon of synesthesia, where the boundaries among the senses dissolve and the languages of music, poetry, painting, and photography intermingle. Together, they will discuss how perception moves beyond eyesight alone, and how photography continues to expand our understanding of what it means to see.

JOHN STRYKER
(1883 – 1974, b. Rockford, IL)

John Stryker is most remembered for his body of photographs he took of the "Olympic of Western sport"- the Rodeo. During his lifetime he crossed America, working rodeos as an announcer, a producer, promoter and sometimes a rider. He developed new ways of photographing action during an event, such as propping his camera on the toe of his boot to capture dramatic shots from the ground. Some historians believe that John Stryker was directly responsible for the growth and sophistication of the sport.

His negatives are in the collection of the University of Texas at Permian Basin, Odessa. His photographs have been exhibited during his lifetime at the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming, and the Amon Carter Museum in Ft. Worth, Texas. His photographs have been published widely including Life, Look, The Cattleman, The Western Horseman, and The Quarter Horse Journal. In 1977, The Rodeo of John Addison Stryker, was published by Encino Press in Austin featuring many of his famous images, with an introduction written by Ron Tyler, the Director of the Amon Carter Museum of Ft. Worth from 2006 -2011.

View John Stryker’s photographs and more in our current exhibition, The Last Cowboy Song. On view through October 31st, free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 11am – 5pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

PREVIEW: Lucienne Bloch
b. Geneva, Switzerland, 1909 – 1999

Lucienne Bloch was a prolific artist. Born in Switzerland, she soon moved with her family to American in midst of the growing tensions of war and anti-Semitism. At the young age of 15 years old, she attended The Cleveland Institute of Art and later in life enrolled in the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Exceeding in her artistic endeavors, she worked for a number of established artists such as sculptor, Anotine Boudelle, and architect Frank Lloyd Wright. However, it was her encounter with Mexican Muralist, Diego Rivera, and painter, Frida Kahlo that solidified Bloch artistic style. Bloch became a close friend of the couple, as well as the chief photographer of the infamous Rockefeller Center mural Diego Rivera was working on in New York before it was destroyed.

In addition to her photographs, Bloch was a Fresco muralist for the Federal Arts Project of the Works Progress Administration from 1934-1939. She continued to teach and work until her death in 1999.

PREVIEW: Nickolas Muray
b. Szeged, Hungary, 1892 – 1965

Born in Szeged, Hungary, Nickolas immigrated to New York City in 1913.
He established himself as a much sought-after portrait photographer and freelanced for magazines including Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar. In the 1930’s his friends included Mexico’s Renaissance artists: Miguel Covarrubias, Rufino Tamayo, Diego Rivera and of course, Frida Kahlo, with whom he had an on again off again ten-year affair.

This handsome and talented artist photographed major personalities in the arts, literature and political worlds. Muray was also a renowned American fencer, who participated in two Olympic Championships.

Nickolas Muray was known for his rich color photographs, using the color print, assembly process, known widely as the Carbro process. In fact, his pool scene fashion photograph for Ladies Home Journal magazine in 1931was the first color photograph printed in a popular magazine.
