The adventure at The Dallas World Aquarium begins at the top of the rainforest exhibit, where exotic birds, such as Cocks-of-the-rock and many species of toucans, can be seen. Endangered animals, such as Orinoco crocodiles, Giant river otters, Antillean manatees and several species of monkeys are part of the

many conservation projects. The aquarium portion displays interesting marine life, including Japanese crabs, jellyfish, Leafy, Weedy and Ribbon seadragons. Black-footed and Blue penguins can be seen swimming as guests enjoy the outdoor South Africa exhibit. Sharks, rays and sawfish are only a few of the fish living in the Mundo Maya cenote. Safe from Neotropical eagles, are euphonias, tanagers and hummingbirds. Reptiles and amphibians, both of significance to the Maya culture, can be seen throughout the exhibit.

The Northern helmeted curassow gets its name from the striking blue-gray casque on its forehead. Native to the cloud forests of Venezuela and Colombia, these rare birds spend much of their time on the forest floor searching for fruit, seeds and other tasty finds.

With its bold red bill, dark plumage and unmistakable “helmet,” this is one bird you won’t easily forget. Come spot one on your next adventure through The Dallas World Aquarium.

Shoebills can stand almost completely motionless for long periods while watching the water for their next meal.

But when the moment arrives, all that stillness gives way to an incredibly powerful hunting move known as the “collapse.” In less than a second, the shoebill flaps forward and plunges its enormous bill toward its prey, using its reinforced beak and skull to absorb the impact.

Quiet, solitary and unmistakably prehistoric-looking, the shoebill proves that sometimes the most impressive move is knowing exactly when to make it.
