Ricky Armendariz appears in Ulterior Motifs No.16 in collaboration with the Wheeler Brothers. Working with oil paints on carved birch panel, Ricky uses his skills to physically alter the pieces.

Across the three works, Armendariz’s procedural hand is instantly recognizable even when another artist enters the composition.

See these works by Ricky Armendariz and the Wheeler Brothers at Ro2 through Oct. 17th.

The iconic drawings of Daniel Johnston feature in Ulterior Motifs No. 16.
Including Plastic People Before Death, created in collaboration with Jeff Wheeler.

Johnston’s drawings I’ve Got to Pick Up the Pieces Again, Sinning Is Easy, and But When Is Tomorrow, rendered in marker and ink on paper, reveal the raw sincerity of his work, alongside titles that stay with you long after you’ve walked away.

In this exhibition, the drawings sit within a wider field of individual works and collaborations. Appearing striking beside The Wheeler Brothers’ accumulation of materials, the proximity of the works makes both approaches sharper.

On view at Ro2 Art through October 17.
Tuesday–Saturday, noon–5 PM.

The Wheeler Brothers made 'Actual Scenes and Genuine Characters' for the exterior of the Saint Anthony Hotel in downtown San Antonio. The two murals pull together pieces of the city’s history, its people, architecture, animals, and industry. There is a great deal to find in them, and no single path through it.

At Ro2 Art, 'Actual Scenes/ Genuine Characters' appears as a scaled, edition diptych printed on the same kind of aluminum composite material used for the murals. The change of scale brings the composite within reach: the fragments and unlikely adjacencies become easier to follow without losing the scope of the original idea.

Gillian Bradshaw-Smith has been part of our gallery’s life for years, and it is a pleasure to have her work in Ulterior Motifs No. 16.

Her Storm of Jupiter works (no.3 and no.1 pictured) sit alongside Fresh Life and Happy Birthday Courtney, made with the Wheeler Brothers. Pairing Gillian’s strong sense of color and dimension with the Wheeler Brother’s love for found material. These collaboration pieces create a tension and show how the qualities of Gillian’s work can carry into a new context.

See the exhibition at Ro2 Art through October 17.

Susan Budge’s stoneware has a presence all its own. In SuperSonic Star Baby no. 1 and no. 2, Jeff Wheeler adds acrylic and charcoal to that presence. The results are strange, exuberant, and very much the work of two artists.

Budge’s own ceramics are here too ("See Me" pictured on last slide). Seeing them beside the collaborative works makes the question of authorship more interesting: the stoneware remains unmistakably hers even as drawing and painting change its register.

On view at Ro2 Art through October 17.

Bryan and Jeff Wheeler have been working together long enough to know when to leave an image open. Safe Paysage, Mmm…Winnemucca, and Friend My Horse are their works together, built in mixed media on wood panel.

Their titles propose places and narratives, then the surfaces complicate them. The material stays visible; so does the brothers’ willingness to interrupt one another’s logic. Look closely at where an image seems to settle, and where it starts moving again.

See them in Ulterior Motifs No. 16 at Ro2 Art through October 17.
We’re open Tuesday–Saturday, noon–5 PM.

Ulterior Motifs began in Lubbock in 1999. Twenty-seven years and sixteen editions later, Bryan and Jeff Wheeler have brought it to Ro2 Art with an extraordinary group of artists who have made work alongside them on their own.

The exhibition lets you see authorship in motion. An image moves from one artist’s vocabulary into another’s. A material changes character when a second hand enters. Some works hold those decisions in plain view. The room is where the relationships become eligible.

Ulterior Motifs No.16 is on view through October 17 at Ro2 Art, 2606 Bataan St, Dallas.

See the Ulterior Motifs No.16 show!

The exhibition lets you see authorship in motion. An image moves from one artist’s vocabulary into another’s. A material changes character when a second hand enters. Some works hold those decisions in plain view; others make you look twice to locate them. These photographs are an introduction. The room is where the relationship becomes legible.

Ulterior Motifs No.16 is on view through October 17 at Ro2 Art, 2606 Bataan St, Dallas.
Tuesday-Saturday, noon-5pm.
