We are the largest zoological park in Texas, home to over 2,000 animals representing 406 species. The Dallas Zoo is 106 acres located south of downtown Dallas, Texas, in Marsalis Park. The mystery mom has been revealed... It's a North American porcupine!

Meet Lillia, our newest porcupette. Born on May 3 to first-time parents Sylvie and Lemon, Lillia is the first North American porcupine born in Dallas Zoo history!

If she looks like a tiny adult, that's because porcupines are precocial, meaning they're born surprisingly independent. She left the birthing den within hours of being born, and by just 8 days old, she was already climbing to the tops of the trees in her habitat. And here's a fun fact – porcupines aren't born with sharp quills! At birth, their quills are soft and fur-like. Once exposed to air, they begin to harden and firm up within about an hour.

For now, Lillia and Sylvie are bonding behind the scenes. Once they're ready, they'll begin making appearances on the Wild Encounters Stage. Stay tuned for updates on this spiky little superstar!

Tiger cubs swim test: The cubs officially took the plunge. 🐅💦

One of the biggest features in the tiger habitat is its deep pool, and now the cubs are finally big enough to explore it! While they were still very young, our zoologists temporarily drained the pool as the cubs learned to navigate the habitat. Now that they’ve grown bigger and more confident, it was time for an important milestone: their swim test. Safe to say, they passed swimmingly (sound on to hear our team cheering on Serasi)!

With the pool back in action, the cubs have full access to explore every corner of their habitat, and you may start to see them more regularly! The best chance to spot them is early in the mornings on Wednesdays, Fridays, and weekends, when they’re typically most active. Their schedule can still shift depending on the weather and how they’re feeling, but this is the current pattern as our team continues to follow their lead!

Dive into summer at your Dallas Zoo with fun, sun, and savings all season long. Here is everything you need to plan your visit:

☀️ $15 summer admission: From July 6 through September 3, admission is just $15 for all guests. Summer hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., giving you more time to explore the Zoo during the coolest parts of the day.
☀️ Dollar Days presented by NexPoint Philanthropies: Back for two special dates on July 16 and August 4. These fan-favorite days offer $1 admission and big Zoo fun. Tickets go on sale June 18.
☀️ Illuminature: Still shining on select nights through June 28. Don’t miss the all-new Family Four Pack, perfect for a summer visit with the whole crew.
☀️ Safari Nights: Returns in the fall, kicking off on September 5. Stay tuned for band announcements as we get closer.
☀️ Teen All Access Pass: Back for its sixth year with the City of Dallas, offering teens free admission to participating attractions across the city, including the Zoo. Official program dates will be announced soon.

There’s a new red-legged seriema chick at the Zoo! ❤️

We recently welcomed a red-legged seriema chick, and both parents have been keeping a close eye on the little one. Seriemas are attentive caregivers, with both parents sharing responsibilities like guarding the chick, feeding them, and guiding them around the habitat as they grow. This fluffy chick is already beginning to explore, but they will continue learning from their parents for weeks to come. See if you can spot the little one on your next Zoo visit!

Tiger cub update: still tiny, still cute 🐯

The cubs are getting more adventurous by the day, and their personalities are really starting to shine. Rina is bold, curious, and first in line for every new experience, while Serasi is more cautious, taking his time and building confidence at his own pace. Mom Suki is never far away, staying close as the cubs roam and offering calm reassurance with soft chuffs… which she happily gets right back from both little ones! 🧡

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we’re taking a moment to recognize the importance of mental well-being in animal care and the support our teams give one another every day.

Behind every habitat is a team that shows up every day with dedication and heart. This work is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding. It’s early mornings, long days, emotional highs, unexpected challenges, and a deep commitment to the animals in our care. Our zoologists experience moments of joy, but also stress, fatigue, grief, and the pressure that comes with caring so deeply. And at the heart of it all, caring for wildlife starts with caring for the people behind the habitats.

For some of our zoologists, that means finding joy in creating enrichment for the animals in their care. For others, it may look like sharing lunch with coworkers or taking a moment to laugh together. No matter what it looks like, those moments make a difference in how we show up for the animals and for one another each day.

In the spirit of those small but meaningful pauses, we’re also leaning into a simple reminder this month with Momentous Institute to “Squeeze the Day,” encouraging moments of care and reset throughout even the busiest days.

To our zoologists and animal care professionals everywhere: thank you for all that you give, both seen and unseen.

MEET OUR BACHELOR BOYS: Rounding up our troop is Mbani, our 7-year-old gorilla, who made the move from the family troop here at the Dallas Zoo to join the boys.

Mbani is adjusting to his new life as a bachelor and has been settling in with the boys nicely. He’s enthusiastic about training and enrichment, always ready to stay busy, and still very much the rambunctious guy we know and love. Since he already knows the habitat so well, he’s been confidently helping the boys, especially Fin, get comfortable in the space. We’re sp excited to watch him settle into this next chapter with the group!
