🔐 Black History Spotlight: Marie Van Brittan Brown 🔐

Before home security cameras and video doorbells became common, an African American nurse named Marie Van Brittan Brown created the first home video security system in the 1960s.

Living in a high-crime area of New York and often home alone at night, Brown wanted a way to see and communicate with visitors without opening her door. With the help of her husband, she invented a system using cameras, monitors, microphones, and an alarm — the foundation of today’s modern home security technology.

Her 1969 patent paved the way for security cameras, smart doorbells, and surveillance systems used in homes around the world today.

We honor Marie Van Brittan Brown — a visionary whose innovation continues to keep families safe.

Joseph Winters, an African American inventor and abolitionist, made history by improving safety for firefighters and communities everywhere. He invented an early version of the fire escape ladder, designed to be mounted on fire wagons to help firefighters quickly reach upper floors and rescue people from burning buildings.

His innovative design helped save countless lives and improved fire safety across cities during a time when such equipment was limited.

Today we honor Joseph Winters for his courage, creativity, and life-saving contributions that continue to impact fire safety and emergency response.

Frederick McKinley Jones revolutionized the world with his invention of mobile refrigeration, earning U.S. Patent No. 2,303,857. His technology made it possible to safely transport perishable foods, medical supplies, and more across long distances, transforming industries worldwide.

Because of his groundbreaking contributions, Jones was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2007.

Today we honor Frederick McKinley Jones for his brilliance, innovation, and lasting impact on modern life. His legacy continues to move the world forward — one refrigerated truck at a time.
