"Girl with a Pearl Earring," dated c. 1665, Johannes Vermeer.
The identity of the girl in the painting is unknown, adding to the artwork's mystique. She wears an exotic dress, an oriental turban, and a large pearl earring, all of which were unusual for the time. The ambiguity surrounding her identity has led to numerous theories. Some speculate she was Vermeer’s daughter, a servant, or a young woman from Delft, where Vermeer lived.
It wasn't until the 19th century that Vermeer’s paintings, including "Girl with a Pearl Earring," were rediscovered and appreciated for their brilliance.
Modern technology has provided deeper insights into Vermeer’s technique. Analysis using X-ray and infrared technology revealed that Vermeer made significant adjustments during the painting process, such as repositioning the girl’s ear and adjusting the turban.

🎨🦍 Still relevant? The Guerrilla Girls, a group of feminist activist artists, use facts, humor, and bold visuals to expose gender and ethnic bias in politics, art, film, and pop culture. In 1989, they created a billboard for the Public Art Fund (PAF) in New York to criticize museums for under-representing female artists and objectifying women. The PAF rejected it as "too provocative," so the Guerrilla Girls rented ad space on NYC buses and ran the ad themselves.
