Congratulations to gallery artist Karen Navarro on her residency at Crystal Bridges.

The artist-in-residence program supports artists in both the exploration of new frontiers and in the creation of new work. The Momentary invites artists working across disciplines to Bentonville, Arkansas, to work alongside a world-class support team of producers, preparators, and curators as they explore, experiment, research, and develop new work. As the Momentary grows as a welcoming hub that gathers and celebrates local heroes and international stars, we invite you to get to know the art of this moment.

Karen Navarro is an Argentinian artist based in Houston, of Mapuche, Guaraní, and European descent. Working across photography, collage, and sculpture, her practice examines the intersections of identity, race, representation, and belonging through the lenses of migration, Indigenous identity, and the enduring legacies of colonization. Navarro’s work engages the complexities of cultural hybridity, communication technologies, and the politics of beauty, creating visual spaces that affirm presence, acceptance, and embodied existence.

Navarro is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Artadia Fellowship, the Top Ten LensCulture Critics’ Choice Award, and the Houston Center for Photography Beth Block Honoraria. In 2026, she was the inaugural artist-in-residence at PAC Art, alongside Claudia Alarcón and Silät. In 2024, she was an artist-in-residence at the Atlantic Center for the Artsin New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Her work has been exhibited widely in the United States and internationally. Selected exhibitions include the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Artpace, Galerija Upuluh, the George Washington Carver Museum, the FAR Center for Contemporary Arts, the Holocaust Museum Houston, and Melkweg Expo.

Navarro’s work has been featured in numerous publications, including ARTnews, The Guardian, The Observer, and Rolling Stone Italia.

Sabrina Piersol (b. 1995, Greenwich, CT) is a Colorado- based painter exploring the intersection of abstraction and representation. Her work is deeply informed by early 20th- century American painting traditions, as well as the fragmented structure of the Classical Greek poetry of Sappho. Piersol balances abstract forms with explicit references to nature, maintaining accessibility while pushing the boundaries of perception. Her paintings explore themes of desire, temporality, fluidity, and speculative extrapolation. Each piece invites viewers to envision alternate pasts and possible futures, creating spaces for reflection and transformation.

Piersol received her BA from Colorado College and her MFA from the University of California, San Diego. Select solo exhibitions include Sow & Tailor, Los Angeles, CA; Edge Art Space, Turin, IT; and the University of California, San Diego. Galleri Urbane is pleased to announce that they have donated artworks by gallery artists Stephen D’Onofrio, Arden Bendler Browning, and Mel Prest for the 2026 Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center Auction. Thank you to our gracious artists for allowing their works to be a part of this auction, which Urbane has supported numerous times throughout the years. The owners of Urbane passionately support the work that DCAC does through supporting children’s rights, providing legal council, and care for victims of child abuse.

The auction and gala, ‘Art for Advocacy,’ celebrates the transformative healing power of art and raises funds and awareness for Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center. Hosted by Stephanie and John Roberts, the evening includes cocktails, a silent art auction featuring 80 works, a seated dinner, and a live art auction.

DCAC is Dallas County’s only agency that unites public and private partners to investigate, prosecute, and provide healing for child abuse cases. DCAC’s multidisciplinary approach ensures the best results for vulnerable children and families by removing obstacles to care, strengthening legal outcomes, and minimizing trauma through comprehensive healing services. DCAC is an international leader in expert casework, innovative therapy, and essential training-all focused on improving lives and advancing child abuse prevention.

With one foot in reality and one in a dreamlike state, British artist Joseph Carway has devised an aesthetic that is familiar, naive and slightly unsettling.
Residing in remote South Norfolk, England, this painter and sculptor embraces the calm landscape to help regulate his “regularly perplexed brain”— a mind that has led him to craft his current exhibition, “Fuzzy Felt,” for Galleri Urbane.

Encompassing dreaming sleepers, self-portraits of self-portraits, and repetitive cartoony profiles, his expressive portraits have an innocent appeal that recalls the early years of school, when every child identifies as an artist. Formerly an accomplished tattooist (a profession he embraced because it was the closest thing to an art career he could imagine), Carway says the industry became a “symbolic minefield” when repeating imagery made a familiar design devoid of any meaning at all.

Joseph Carway — ‘Fuzzy Felt’

Galleri Urbane is pleased to announce Fuzzy Felt, an upcoming solo exhibition by England-based artist Joseph Carway. This marks the artist’s first solo show with the gallery following two successful art fairs, and group show inclusion.

An excerpt from the essay by writer Eve Hill-Agnus, which accompanies the exhibition:

You must get close to Joseph Carway’s work to enter his world, which is ever so gently bewildering. The dimensions—often plywood the size of an A4 sheet of paper—lend themselves to such intimacy. A vestige from his earliest days of sketching out ideas as tattoo flash art, the size is also pragmatic formally. Within the bounds of its surface, Carway creates intimacy: like watching a tiny television set with your face one inch from the screen, or a condensed, private theater staged for an audience of one.

You may call it folk art, or art brut, or naive art if you would like to trace kinship. Carway does indeed cherish found objects and collect old folk pieces, finding them refreshingly simple and unaffected. He admires the rudimentary toy a parent makes for a child, its unskilled roughness paired with intuition. He admires that a tattoo can be read as folksy and avant garde in its own secret way—the way ink softens and spreads into ambiguous blurs fascinates him as much as the tattoo’s power to convey ideas from a small box of symbolic tricks. He admires, too, the work of the French Nabi painter Edouard Vuillard: the flatness of pattern, the condensing of textures in a small space, just as Carway’s own work compresses a scene until there is no longer a difference between the figure and the field it stands in.

Shinya Azuma
‘(Not) Samurai (Not) Cowboy’

Galleri Urbane is thrilled to welcome Japanese artist Shinya Azuma to Texas for an upcoming residency at the Augustus Owen Foundation following with a solo exhibition ‘(Not) Samurai (Not) Cowboy’. This marks the artist’s first solo show with the gallery, in partnership with Cohju Gallery based in Kyoto, Japan.

Azuma’s paintings center on the human figure, depicting moments of vulnerability, hesitation, and quiet psychological tension. Through vivid color fields and simplified compositions, he portrays individuals caught in unguarded and often awkward situations. Rather than heroic figures, his subjects embody a contemporary condition shaped by uncertainty and self-awareness. Balancing humor and discomfort, Azuma’s works reflect a generation navigating a world where traditional ideals of success and certainty have gradually lost their force.

Today we’re highlighting gallery artist Stephen D’Onofrio 🍊 He was commissioned to create art for the cover of D.K. Furutani’s debut novel, ‘When Mikan Road Was Ours’, now on the shelves of Barnes & Noble.

D’Onofrio’s thematic image-making is broadly characterized by an interest in the home decor market, the mass commodification of art, and the generic visual language that accompanies commercial design. His paintings explore the relationship between physical spaces and the objects we fill them with. Often alluding to typical domestic decor and household ornaments, his canvases make these inherently empty objects into simplified symbols and patterns that can then be rearranged and compressed to carry a formal sensibility. The “Produce(d) Paintings” series serves as an historic exemplar of still-life painting that is as old as the medium itself.

Currently, D’Onofrio addresses the idea of painting as ornament, incorporating stock subjects of landscape, still life, and portraiture becoming knickknacks into his lexicon. The painter distills, consolidates, and appropriates the overwhelming amount of generic design aesthetic in the commercial decor market. Rather than fight the inherent kitschiness of this visual language, he embraces the imagery so his canvases can, in turn, become a critique of the subject it represents.

JOSEPH CARWAY — ‘Fuzzy Felt’
Joseph Carway lives in Norwich, England, where he paints from his home in the Norfolk countryside, alongside his work as a tattooist. Carway’s first solo exhibition was in 2025 at Giant Runt, Fort Worth, Texas. His work has entered important collections in the United States and abroad during his emergence as a painter in 2025. Carway recently exhibited with Galleri Urbane at Felix Fair, Los Angeles, Dallas Art Fair and our recent summer group show.

SHINYA AZUMA — ‘(Not) Samurai (Not) Cowboy’
Shinya Azuma was born in Osaka in 1994, and currently based in Kyoto, Japan. Azuma received M.F.A in Contemporary Art from Kyoto University of Art and Design. Fresh off a successful showing at Art Basel Hong Kong 2025 and the launch of his new monograph and solo show that opened in Tokyo, July 2026. Shinya is the artist-in-residence at the Augustus Owen Foundation, Dallas. The exhibition will be created on site. Azuma has exhibited in galleries across Japan, Paris and Hong Kong including a special section for young artists at Sydney Contemporary (2019). Notable collections include the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, Takahashi Ryutaro Collection, Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection, sequence MIYASH*TA PARK, and the Bao Room.
