Selepak Khmer Angkor (SKA) was founded on August 22, 2010 under the sponsorship of the Cambodian Buddhist Temple of Dallas. The temple serves as a place of worship as well as a community gathering center for Cambodians in the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area. Parents, students, and volunteers are actively involved and are a vital part of the planning and operation. By following a weekly schedul
e, parents and volunteers provide lunch for all members of the organization. Parents also assist with costume design and performance preparation. Other volunteers provide additional support as needed, e.g. designing program materials, serving as photographer etc. Students are under the dance & bokator instruction of Ms. Classes are held on Sundays from 10:00 A.M to 2:00 P.M at the temple. Students benefit from the teachings of old and new dance choreography and kbach kun boran techniques/exercises. These repertoires are featured annually at the Khmer New Year Celebration in April held at the temple and the Pchum Ben (Ancestors’ Day) Festival in the fall. In addition to performing for these celebrations, SKA also proudly displays Khmer culture at occasions that provide opportunities to work with a variety of other multicultural organizations. SKA helps build the students’ character within leadership, commitment, and courage. The organization is a gateway to expose the younger generation to Cambodian culture as well as preserving the Cambodian identity.
