She found a shelter.
Laid her eggs.
And made a decision
that will cost her everything.

A female octopus can lay
up to 400,000 eggs in a single clutch —
each one no larger than a grain of rice,
each one carrying the entire future
of her bloodline.

From the moment that last egg is laid —
she stops eating.
Completely.
Forever.

For six months she stays —
never leaving the den,
not even for a single second.

She fans the eggs constantly
with her arms —
keeping them oxygenated,
clean, and alive.

She removes parasites one by one.
She fights off starfish,
crabs, eels, and fish —
anything that comes too close.

With arms growing weaker every week.
With a body consuming itself —
her own muscle, her own organs —
just to stay alive long enough
to see them hatch.

And when they finally do —
when thousands of tiny octopuses
drift up into the open ocean —

she is already dying.

Her last act —
a final burst of water
from her siphon,
blowing her babies
into the current.

Then silence.

No other creature on Earth
makes this sacrifice
with such complete,
unconditional devotion.

The ocean has never produced
a greater mother.

Follow OCEANOVA.
Some love stories
end in the deep. 🐙

Octopus heart facts in the link below. Most don't know there are over 300 species. They have 9 brains, a central brain and 8 others so each arm can act independently. Before I begin creating art focusing on an ocean dwelling creature, I do research so I can educate others. I love what I do!
