“A dream that will need all the love you can give/Every day of your life for as long as you live.” From THE SOUND OF MUSIC. This shovel (spade) is one of my favorite possessions. I bought it at a market while on tour in South Africa when I was performing for “the Main Programme” at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda (Grahamstown) before my sold-out two-week run in Cape Town. I loved the ingenuity and creativity needed to repurpose this nearly broken old tool. There is true need and poverty in SA. I tried to buy as many things as possible to support these fellow artists. And it was nearly impossible to get this shovel back home to the States in a suitcase. “Security!” It almost looks like a weapon. But I see it as a wand! It reminds me to work on my art and for my causes with all of my heart, might, mind, and strength. Sometimes that’s what it has taken to tell my story the way I’ve done onstage. I’ve told it against all odds. I hope you can see one of my solo shows someday. In this age of “influencers” make sure you’re making art, not just content.
