Erin Cluley Gallery is a contemporary art gallery exhibiting emerging and mid-career artists from the United States and abroad. The gallery presents a provocative program of artists working in both traditional and alternative forms including painting, sculpture, new media, photography, sculptural installation and public intervention. In conjunction with mounting exhibitions inside the gallery spac

e, Erin Cluley Gallery will maintain a focus on presenting public projects conceptualized by the gallery's artists. Negotiating projects on the artists’ behalf, the gallery will make this an ongoing part of the exhibition program and an impactful contribution to public art in Dallas.

Join us this Saturday, August 29 at 4pm for an intimate walkthrough of ‘Traces’ led by artist Gary Goldberg, ahead of our opening celebration.

Goldberg will share insights into his felted wool textiles, made in collaboration with artisans in Oaxaca. He and Erin Cluley will talk through the work and the ideas connecting the artists across the exhibition.

New felt tapestries by Gary Goldberg are on view in Oaxaca, featured in ‘Hacer memoria(s): Fotografía periodística y documental en Oaxaca’ (Making Memory(ies): Photojournalism and Documentary Photography in Oaxaca) at the Centro de las Artes de San Agustín, on view through August 16.

Goldberg’s tapestries begin as photographs of the textured, layered walls of Oaxaca, which he has been documenting for more than twenty years. Each is then translated into wool through a dry needle felting process by a team of artisans at the Centro de las Artes de San Agustín, using natural pigments including cochineal and indigo, so the work returns to the place where it was made. ‘Hacer memoria(s)’ unfolds across six thematic sections tracing the history of documentary photography in Oaxaca and its ongoing impact on sociopolitical movements in the region.

Opening our fall season, ‘Traces’ brings together an international roster of artists, including Gary Goldberg, Jumaadi, Magdalena Rantica, Florencia Rothschild, Antonio Turok, and Sarita Westrup, whose work considers the ways people understand and navigate place through the body. Across photography, painting, and sculpture, the exhibition examines how movement, cultural identity, and embodied experience shape our relationships to the spaces we inhabit.

Drawing on non-Western modes of thinking about the body and geography, ‘Traces’ focuses on cultural practices and iconographies from Latin America and Southeast Asia, troubling stable notions of how our built and natural surroundings shape our personal narratives, and vice versa.

Join us for the opening reception Saturday, August 29, from 5 to 7 PM. Works will be on view August 22 – September 26.

Wishing a very happy birthday to artist William Atkinson 🎉

Atkinson’s large-scale mixed media paintings fold together abstract expressionism, photo collage, and typography, carrying over the loud, subversive energy of his early years as a street artist in Los Angeles. Each canvas is completed in a single sitting, with no retouches, so every piece holds one uninterrupted moment.

His most recent solo exhibition with the gallery, ‘On the Road’, drew on found photography from a midcentury family’s road trip from Texas to Colorado, honoring and disrupting the tenets of American culture through bold mark-making and gesture.

We’re grateful for the years we’ve worked together and excited for all that’s ahead.

Wishing a very happy birthday to artist Sarita Westrup 🎉

Our first time working with Westrup was in 2023, when she became the inaugural winner of our annual Cluley Projects exhibition. Our community’s response to her work was immediate, and it’s been a joy to watch her career take off in the years since.

Rooted in weaving and bricolage, Westrup’s sculptural basketry draws on her upbringing in the Rio Grande Valley along the Texas-Mexico border, translating the material languages of the borderlands into forms that are at once architectural and intimate. In the past two years alone she has completed a year-long residency at the Penland School of Craft, shown in ‘Flow States — La Trienal’ at El Museo del Barrio, mounted the two-person exhibition ‘Shared Ground’ at Superhouse in New York, been awarded the Center for Craft’s Virginia A. Groot Material Exploration Residency, and was recently featured in Architectural Digest’s ‘Meet 8 Artists Leading America’s Craft Revival’.

For his work ‘september/september’ (9.01.2025-8.31.2026), Nic Nicosia committed himself to devising a single drawing everyday for an entire year. By August 31st, 2026, Nicoisa will have produced 365 serialized cartoons, each providing a snapshot into his daily life.

Similar to works such as ‘it’s not about the words’ (12.10.2022-12.31.2024) and ‘100 Years’ (2015), ‘september/september’ sees the artist reckoning with the constraints and freedoms of autobiography. Whether in written language, symbolism, or humor, Nicosia’s work begs the question: how does one capture their life in art?

Featured in Nic Nicosia’s ‘a little more,’ ‘sun, earth, and moon’ (5.14-8.19.2025) captures the artist’s playful reckoning with our position and existential insignificance in the wider universe.

Constructed using Nicosia’s signature paperclay, the three sculptures reduce celestial giants into surreal tableaus. ‘earth,’ represented by a pale blue sphere atop a circus pedestal, features a naked figure crashing headfirst into the planet. The artist’s interpretation of the moon looks at the viewer with silver, almond-shaped eyes; on the back, Nicosia has documented songs written since the year of his birth with “moon” in their title.
