"It's the merry month of June..."

Since it is June, it seems like the perfect time to celebrate one of Ireland's most beloved traditional songs, "Rocky Road to Dublin." (What's your favorite recording or memory of Rocky Road to Dublin? Post below- We'd love to hear it!)

Although often mistaken for an ancient folk song, Rocky Road to Dublin was written in the mid-19th century by Irish poet D.K. Gavan. It tells the story of a young man leaving his home in County Tyrone, traveling to Dublin, crossing to Liverpool, and ultimately finding himself in a series of humorous adventures before proudly proclaiming his Irish identity.

The song is famous for its rapid-fire lyrics and lively rhythm, making it a favorite challenge for singers and instrumentalists alike. It has been performed by countless musicians over the years, with each generation adding its own style while preserving the spirit of the original. Songs like Rocky Road to Dublin remind us that Celtic music is more than entertainment. They are a living record of the journeys, humor, resilience, and identity of the people who came before us.

That spirit is at the heart of the Southwest Celtic Music Association. Our mission is to study, perform, promote, and preserve traditional Celtic music, dance, and culture in the Southwest, ensuring that these songs continue to be shared, learned, and enjoyed for generations to come.

So for these last few days of June, whether you're singing along, learning the words, or simply tapping your foot to the tune, take a moment to appreciate the rich history behind this timeless favorite.

"The flowers they are springing in the May morning dew.”

On Beltane (also celebrated as Beltaine or May Day) people across Celtic traditions welcomed the beginning of summer with music, dancing, flowers, bonfires, and community celebrations. One beloved May Day custom was rising early to wash the morning dew across your face, believed to bring luck, beauty, and good health for the coming year.

That connection between nature, celebration, and music still lives on in Celtic traditions today. From lively sessions to centuries-old songs passed from generation to generation, Celtic music continues to mark the changing seasons and bring people together.
