Moo the cat recently auditioned for the lead role in DCT's next show Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience. His monologue was a thoughtful interpretation of the character.

Folks, we give you “Mole with a Pearl Earring” and “Frida Kah-Mole” 😍 drawn by the one and only Leah Mazur who is designing the set for NAKED MOLE RAT GETS DRESSED: THE ROCK EXPERIENCE! 🎸 Leah Mazur

Here’s a glimpse into the artist’s perspective:

Fine art has entered its mole-rat era.

Tradition says naked. Wilbur says wardrobe.
For Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience, we’ve been looking to artists who understood a thing or two about tradition, and what happens when you refuse to let tradition define you. So naturally, we put the naked mole rats into the art historical canon.
Vermeer gives us the canon and tradition. Frida Kahlo gives us the self and the expression.

A pearl earring. A crown of flowers.... A pair of pants.

The joke is silly, but the idea underneath it is at the heart of the show: tradition only has power because somebody keeps choosing to follow it.

Borrowing from Vermeer and Kahlo lets our little mole rats step directly into artistic tradition, and allows them to gleefully mess with it. Because sometimes understanding the rules gives you the perfect opportunity to break them.

The most joyful act of rebellion and self-expression is looking at “the way things have always been done” and asking:

…but why?
