Many works by the successful and prolific British suspense novelist, Agatha Christie, have been brought to the big screen with greater or lesser capacity, but never in such a fortunate way as in Witness for the Prosecution, demonstrating that Billy Wilder was a master at tackling any type of film genre. Staged admirably, its story of criminal-judicial intrigue is told with a wise interspersion of flashbacks, a precise rhythm that never allows the interest of the plot to wane, and an excellent script with lively, brilliant dialogues...
Charles Laughton, an actor with a reputation for being troublesome, threw himself into his role; cunning, tenacious, veteran, acidic, exhausted, angry and intelligent Wilfrid Roberts, โthe best lawyer in London.โ In his memoirs, Wilder speaks of Laughton as โthe actor with the greatest range, professionalism and power he has ever known.โ For her part, Marlene Dietrich, sensual, cold and desperately in love; She was convinced that she was going to be nominated for an Oscar for her role as Christine. Unfairly, she would not receive that well-deserved nomination. And a great Tyrone Power, meticulous, charming and phony. Alfred Hitchcock once confessed that many people approached him to congratulate him on this film, believing that he had directed it and not Wilder. This adaptation, which along with "Murder On The Orient Express" from 1974, were the only ones that its author liked, is an exciting, highly entertaining film, full of black humor and superb performances, which makes it one of the best courtroom dramas of all time.
