Siding crew cut into my deck without permission while I was out of the country. I gave them permission to remove the deck boards if they needed access, but I clearly said not to cut them.

When I came back, I found that they had cut through most of the deck boards and almost all of the joists without asking me or telling me in advance.

They told me they would fix it themselves, but they will not pay for another contractor to do the work. After what happened, I’m not comfortable letting them continue.

They also said they could rebuild the whole deck, but I would have to pay for that out of pocket. The deck is over 20 by 20 feet, so rebuilding would be expensive.

I had plans to replace the top boards with composite or another long-lasting material in the future, but now I’m worried the frame underneath is compromised or poorly patched.

I still have about 11000 dollars from the insurance payout that I haven’t paid them yet. I also used this same company for the roof, but now I’m questioning whether I can trust them to do the work properly.

We’re new homeowners and new to the country, so we’re not sure what our rights are in this kind of situation.

Can I ask them for compensation or money for the damage they caused

If yes, how much would be reasonable to ask, considering they cut through most of the frame without permission

Am I within my rights to hold the 11000 dollars until this is resolved properly

What should we do next if we don’t feel comfortable letting them continue the work
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. We just want the job done right and don’t want to be taken advantage of

Build a deck on a gravel basement floor? Our basement has a gravel floor. Can I build a platform out of composit boards on part of the floor? It would be nice to be able to go down there and do the laundry without shoes.

I am planning on having a contractor build an unfinished flooring in my attic (next to ceiling access panel) in order for me to use for purposes of light storage. The space is located at the center of my attic, where there is an open space between the existing roof truss that is approx 23 ft long (left to right) and 8 fr deep (front to back). The ceiling joists from the level below span from front to back, making them perpendicular to the length of the space I’m looking to place flooring (meaning I can get load support from many joists over the 23 ft span).

The issue I am encountering is that I have about 16 in. of insulation above the ceiling joists, and trying to figure out how to apply the plywood flooring without removing or compressing any of the insulation. My understanding is that the best way to do this would consist of installing vertical supports (either 2’x6’ or 2’x8’ for added strength), followed by installing a joist-supported sleeper platform on top of the vertical supports, before installing the plywood boards on top.

What also is throwing me off is the fact that there are 2’x4’s that seem to sit on top of the ceiling joists in a perpendicular fashion (see photos attached); since these 2x4s sit on the ceiling joists, should my vertical supports sit on these or on the ceiling joists directly?

Could you let me know if this approach is the ideal way I should tackle this project? Would there be any risks with platform stability of the vertical support bars being over a foot tall in order to clear the insulation? Are there any other recommendations you have on how to best move forward with this effort?

This crack is letting water in. How would it get fixed? Whats the issue? Getting a person to look at this in the next 5 days. It lets in water. How bad that it’s hollow? How would someone fix this? Trying to not get screwed in method of fixing since I want a waterproof basement and want the fix to be permanent

Thanks!

Big gap 😣 about 12 inch—will tape and mud hold, or do I need to redo it❓ Really hoping not to tear it apart.
