Supernumeraries, otherwise known as ‘supers’, play a vital role in the success of operas. These individuals do not have to speak or sing, but have a great attitude and a love or desire to be on the stage. They play servants, priests, guards, maids, villagers, etc. to help fill the stage for productions. The director of the opera determines the number and type of Supers required for the production. For this reason, we may not know very far in advance of rehearsals who we will be able to cast. Additionally, the sizes of pre-existing costumes are often a consideration.
