Posted prominently at the entrance was a sign that read:
"NO TIPPING = NO SERVICE."
I stopped for my morning coffee today and was surprised by what I saw before I even walked through the door. ☕️😳
I believe in rewarding great service. I'm happy to tip employees who work hard and provide a positive experience. But seeing a mandatory tipping requirement before any service had been provided made me stop and think.
I've always viewed a tip as a voluntary way to say "thank you" for good service. When tipping becomes a condition of being served, it begins to feel less like a gesture of appreciation and more like a required fee.
I understand the challenges restaurants face. Rising food costs, higher wages, and increased operating expenses are real issues. But if those costs need to be covered, I'd rather see them reflected transparently in menu prices or a clearly stated service charge than presented as a mandatory tip before I've even placed an order.
For me, that sign changed the entire tone of the experience.
Instead of feeling welcomed as a customer, I felt like I was being handed an obligation before I'd even ordered my coffee.
So I thanked them, turned around, and chose to take my business somewhere else.
What would you have done?
Would you still have gone inside...
Or would you have found another place for your morning coffee? ☕
