Next Generation Next Level Education. Using concepts to remember.

When faced with 8th graders who couldn't seem to keep their mouths closed, my reaction was to implement a 5 minute guided meditation each class.

When excessive talking is the problem, the only viable solution seemed to be to take the opposite route and seek complete silence. 💆🏾‍♀️

Would you know it worked wonders?

Sitting still and silencing the mind drastically increased students' focus, so they were ready for the lesson! Students who participated and were quiet the whole time received stickers! Students who were not participating were expected to remain quiet. Students who were disruptive did not receive a sticker.

Simple affirmations, common quotes, encouraging statements paired with calming instrumental music in the background is the recipe for a calm and centered class.

Try it out!

Before you can get to Bloom's Taxonomy, you must visit Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

These are both things my teaching practice is heavily influenced by.

What Maslow's says, before you can begin learning, you must have your basic needs met. Learning and fulfilling your highest potential would classify as self-actualization, which is the highest tier.

You have students in your classroom who experience food insecurity, unstable housing, loud & violent homes, etc. These people are not worried about the lessons you're teaching.

If you can show that you care or perhaps assist with household needs in some way, then you can bring these kids to engaging in your lessons. Their needs don't necessarily have to be solved first, but they definitely have to be addressed first.

Sometimes you can convince a scholar that earning good grades and pursuing higher education can help solve some of the financial problems at home. Now they see their assignments as a way out of what stays on their mind.

Be mindful of people's needs before you're forcing learning onto them.

Bloom's Taxonomy:

The organization of the levels of questioning based on increasing difficulty. The lower level questions require you only recall (regurgitate) information back to answer the question.

The higher order questions require you to create a question yourself.

The point being, the higher you are operating on this model, the more mastery you display with the material.

True skill is creating a lesson where all students are being challenged, yet all students are able to see success.

You accomplish this by having examples of some prerequisite concepts, basic examples that are on grade level, and challenging examples that may not be tested.

Low floor.
High ceiling.

The students performing below grade level are still learning math; they are consumed with similar content at a level they can reach.

The high achieving students are still being challenged and growing in their knowledge of the subject.

Everybody wins!

Writing a great lesson plan requires a lot more than knowing the subject and providing examples of each type of problem.

As you can see in some of my solving videos, there are many prerequisite concepts that are necessary to master the current standard. https://www.facebook.com/reel/1574969170781510

I was told you want a low floor and a high ceiling: meaning students performing far below grade level can still learn from the lesson with the little that they know, and students who are mastering each grade level are still being pushed and challenged with the content.

There's a lot of strategies designed to help you notice when your students have or have not mastered a subject yet. The simplest tool I used to gauge whether or not I still had my class following along in the lesson with me, was facial expressions!

Do your students look confident? Or do they look confused?

Stopping to breakdown a concept that leaves your class with puzzled expressions on their face, slowly teaches you what they know and what they don't... so you can design a better lesson next time!

When students feel that they will be given a thorough explanation (that actually helps) when they pose a question, they are more likely to ask questions when you lose them.

My classroom was filled with students talking and engaging with the subject.

When students feel safe making mistakes (no one will comment negatively per classroom rules) and they are encouraged to ask questions as soon as they don't understand, you've now given them access to the pristine lesson you've created.
