Wanna draw better? And draw better caricatures?
First understand that drawing is a skill, not a talent. Don’t get me wrong. We all have certain things that we lean towards and are kind of born with, but we can all draw better!
Daily practice is good, but practice with purpose is much better! If you struggle with perspective, start there. If your values are off, focus on that. So, sketching is fun, but pursuing aspects of drawing with intention is key!
You don’t know what you don’t know! Technique and different approaches are learned faster than us just experimenting on our own!
Take a structured class, use YouTube and read books that can significantly improve your skill and techniques. In many cases it can open the door to what is actually achievable with your drawing! Which leads me to the next big one!
My first inspiration to really expand my work in caricature was the great Tom Richmond . I bought his book, Mad Art caricature and learned a lot, attended one of his workshops and learned even more! The best part was simply having that opportunity for Mr Richmond to actually look over my work and help me identify issues that I was having a tough time with.
In addition to Tom Richmond there are many artists in my field that are simply incredible! Glenn Ferguson and his incredible detail and exaggeration, Alani Jimenez .alanij and his speed and accuracy as well as intense focus on color is amazing. Damien Dunn who works within incredible poses and situations for the subjects he’s drawing. And Daniel Steiglitz .stieglitz draws incredible multi subject drawings just blow my mind. His work inspired my drawing when I was just starting of 16 mermaids all in the same picture drawn live at my caricature booth!
For that matter, my greatest hero is still Leonardo da Vinci. His composition and flow of what you see and where your focus goes, constantly inspires me!
Don’t stress out about “YOUR STYLE”! That will come with practice and change countless times as you grow as an artist!
Most importantly, HAVE FUN! That’s why we draw! I am just humble that I get to do it for a l
