The Big Dance begins.
Mike Spencer came up with the idea for the Big Dance because of the lack of places for his students to go out social dancing. As a teacher, he felt it was an important piece that was missing in his dancer’s training. Although he regularly competes with his students, he really wanted a to provide and opportunity for his students to learn from other teachers and to just have fun. Even though he regularly competes with several of his students, he knew that some students wouldn’t respond well to the added pressure of being at a competition, even if it is “just to dance”.
After many months of planning, the first Big Dance was held in Nov of 2017. That first year, it was a one day event and there were four workshops and a Saturday night dance. Mike was beyond excited to get 125 attendees. Now The Big Dance is held the first weekend in January, at the Scarlet Pearl Casino.
Every year The Big Dance has gotten bigger and bigger and has grown in size and attendance. It is now a weekend event with ten instructors teaching workshops and two dances. The Friday night dance is a west coast swing mix dance and Saturday night is a mix of all the social dances, including ballroom, country, swing and latin. They boast a huge 50 ft by 60 ft competition dance floor and a National Shoe vendor on hand.
Mikes said “Our goal was to bring the entire dance community together to just have fun. It’s one time a year when dancers from different states and dance backgrounds can come together with the top pros for the biggest social dance party of the year.”
In past years, most of our 300+ dancers hail from Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, Texas, Florida and Tennessee but each year we have an increasing number of dancers traveling further to enjoy a weekend of learning, social dancing and good ol’ fashioned southern hospitality!
