Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 5th from 12-3 pm! This will be the first of two public art events in downtown Cuyahoga Falls this summer in partnership with the city, ArtsNow, Collide: Cuyahoga Falls, and Curated Storefront. Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don Walters has shared that the city is “committed to garnering public input to ensure that the thoughts and voices of our residents are represented through the works of commissioned artists.”

As such, the event will be highly interactive. Performing artists Neema Bal and Katie Beck of Gum-Dip Theatre will collaborate with community members to create a series of theatrical vignettes inspired by the Cuyahoga River, centered on participants’ stories. And visual artist Alison Miltner Rich will interview community members along Front Street to collect drawings and stories about their relationship with the Cuyahoga River. Using this community input, she will create three paintings of the river that have a relationship to each other and will be displayed downtown as a triptych. Join us for a family fun, community engagment art creation.

Mayor Don Walters has announced an art-centered community engagement event in
partnership with ArtsNow, Collide: Cuyahoga Falls, and Curated Storefront. The event will be
held on Sunday, June 5, from 12–3 p.m., at the Cuyahoga Falls Downtown Pavilion, 2085 Front
Street. This is the first of two public engagement sessions that will be held in the community.

Local artist Alison Miltner Rich will be interviewing community members along Front Street to
collect drawings and stories about their relationship with the Cuyahoga River - how they feel
about living near it, what it means to them, and why it is important to them. Using this
community input, the artist will create three paintings of the river that have a relationship to each
other and will be displayed as a triptych, a set of three associated artworks intended to be
appreciated together. The content of each piece will be directly influenced by the images and
words submitted by community members on June 5.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and here at the Akron Zoo, we are strive to raise awareness and understanding for mental health. Last summer, we debuted a sculpture called a bipolar butterfly, located in our Lehner Family Foundation Zoo Gardens.

The sculpture is part of the Bipolar Butterfly Project, founded by artist Kimmy Henderson. Kimmy started the initiative as a visual representative to raise awareness and show community for anyone dealing with mental health. The project strives to change the stigma on mental illness and encourages support and understanding.

Next time you visit your Akron Zoo, we encourage you to stop by our zoo-themed bipolar butterfly, and take a photo with it. Learn more about our bipolar butterfly at https://www.akronzoo.org/akron-zoo-joins-the-bipolar-butterfly-project-with-new-sculpture.
