A sampling of the vendor exhibits at this year's fair-some have made this an annual event over the years. Others were relatively new to Cummington. Thank you everyone for your participation.

Luckily the rain held off until Sunday so we could feature the talents of both the sheepdog herding and the sheep shearing demonstrations. Both were much appreciated by the fair-goers.

The 50th and final fair brought in special gold color shavings for the occasion. The Fitting and Showmanship classes, from senior to novice, were first in the ring and attracted lots of spectators.

Let’s hear it for Alice! Alice Newth, a reliable and caring presence at the UMass Equine and Livestock Research and Education Farm in Hadley for more than 40 years, is retiring.

Newth has been a fixture at UMass Amherst since earning her bachelor’s degree in 1982, when she began working at the university’s dairy farm. She eventually moved to the 130-acre Hadley Farm—first to the horse barn and later to the livestock barn that houses pigs, goats, and sheep.

“I don't think I've ever worked with somebody who is more dedicated to her work and the program than Alice,” said Bob Skalbite, a former student and teaching assistant of Newth’s, who now serves as director of farms and facilities for the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at UMass Amherst. “Nor have I ever met somebody who has done more to try to bring people together in a workplace with a sense of community and belonging.”

“I’m going to miss the kids the most,” expressed Newth. “I’ve been working with some really nice people over the years, but I think that the students are the most fun. They get so excited about actually getting to do things like delivering a lamb or piglet. As an educator, you feed off of that enthusiasm.”

❤️ Thank You for 50 Incredible Years ❤️

As the final Massachusetts Sheep & Woolcraft Fair comes to a close, we want to say one simple thing:

Thank you.

Thank you to every volunteer who gave their time, every vendor who filled the barns with creativity, every shepherd who brought their animals, every demonstrator who shared their skills, every musician, sponsor, judge, exhibitor, and every single person who walked through the gates over the last 50 years.

What began as a small gathering grew into a beloved New England tradition — built entirely by community, passion, and a shared love of sheep, wool, farming, and fiber arts.

For generations, the Cummington Fairgrounds became a place where friendships were formed, skills were passed down, and memories were made year after year.

While this chapter is ending, the impact of this community will continue far beyond the fairgrounds.

Thank you for supporting, preserving, and celebrating this special tradition with us for half a century. We are deeply grateful to have shared it with all of you.

With heartfelt appreciation,
Massachusetts Sheep & Woolcraft Fair

💛 One More Day. One Last Time. 💛

Today is the final day ever of the Massachusetts Sheep & Woolcraft Fair at the Cummington Fairgrounds.

For 50 years, this fair has brought together shepherds, fiber artists, farmers, musicians, families, and friends from across New England to celebrate wool, craftsmanship, agriculture, and community. Generations have learned to spin, knit, weave, felt, and connect here in the hills of Cummington.

Today is our last chance to gather together on these grounds for this beloved tradition. Whether you’ve attended for decades or this is your very first visit, we hope you’ll join us to celebrate the memories, the people, the animals, and the spirit that made this fair so special.
