A friend and student needed a place to keep a kiln after moving to a smaller place. I was more than happy to “store” it and in the mean time I installed a new plug so it can be controlled by my wall mounted kiln controller. I can’t control two kilns at the same time but it’s easy enough to load up two kilns and just swap the plug and thermocouple when the first finishes firing.

A friend gave me some porcelain to play with and I realized it’d been years since I mad a porcelain teapot so there are 4 porcelain teapots in the works.

I made a lamp! This clay isn’t meant to be translucent at all but if you push it hard enough you can just get light to glow through. I think it makes for a great effect. I also have some porcelain teapots in the works so look out for those :)

I’m bringing some handmade tools with me to Northwest Tea Festival this September. It’ll be the first time my spout tools have been available outside of coming to my studio. I recently got gifted the lumber from a dead dogwood tree that’s made me more willing to use my stash to make tools for those that can get good use from them :)

When students ask how to make a lid that fits just right, my answer is a bit counterintuitive: make it just a bit bigger than it needs to be. Only after it’s been fired twice do you grind it into place for a perfect whisper fit. Bottoms can get a bit roughed in the glaze fire. I want them to be surface safe for my customers so I use a diamond file to flatten and smooth them a bit. Anywhere the pot is abraded it reveals the darker center color of the clay. The color difference is seen by some as a flaw but I see it as a mark of care and consideration. Pots will go up noon on Saturday July 11
