Good things are happening in the studio. Porcelain teapots, which I’m still learning from and staring at… a lot, and some great cups and bowls from Drayk. I don’t love the feel of this glaze but I’ve been reaching for it all day so he’s definitely onto something good.

A studio is more than a place to make work. It’s a sanctuary. When I first learned to make pots, the ceramics room at my high school was the only place I wanted to be. There, my mind could be simultaneously flooded with creative chaotic curious thought, and yet silent to so many other things. In college the studio began as an extension of that safe space but by the end of my five years attempting to make it through college it became a hostile environment to me. I’ve had a mixed bag since then. Being able to craft my own space and see it grow and flourish has been one of the most satisfying and fulfilling tasks in my life to date. The best part is that the space I’m building isn’t geographic. It’s an infrastructure that I’ll carry with me. I missed Northwest Teafest this year and I’m super sad about it but what I’m building is worth focus and determination, two things I’ve never lacked.

A friend and student needed a place to keep a kiln after moving to a smaller place. I was more than happy to “store” it and in the mean time I installed a new plug so it can be controlled by my wall mounted kiln controller. I can’t control two kilns at the same time but it’s easy enough to load up two kilns and just swap the plug and thermocouple when the first finishes firing.

A friend gave me some porcelain to play with and I realized it’d been years since I mad a porcelain teapot so there are 4 porcelain teapots in the works.
