Some backings have a story — and this one? It’s a masterpiece. 🎨

Painted Backing 8479 was originally brought to life for a film that premiered in 1993. More than 30 years later, it’s found a whole new purpose in the hands of fine art photographer Julia Fullerton-Batten — and the result is breathtaking!!!

At 40’ x 15’, this hand-painted backdrop isn’t just window dressing. It’s a canvas for the imagination, a piece of history, and now, a work of art in its own right.

I am excited to share this new edition to my project ‘The Art of Hollywood, 2026’

With ‘The Art of Hollywood’, I return to a time when film posters were still painted by hand - images that condensed entire worlds, moods, and promises into a single frame; picking up this visual language and translating it into carefully staged scenes, rooted in the aesthetics of classic cinema.

Every image is thoughtfully researched, shaped, and placed, allowing it to transcend mere staging and become a lived experience. This requires devotion, patience, and almost tender precision in constructing the image.

Each of my images is drawn from a pool of ‘movie memories’ that span my entire life…a life that has always loved cinema.

A huge thank you to Alex Prager for your gifted photography and for bringing Painted Backing 8832 to life on the shoot for Christopher Nolan’s film “The Odyssey”. 🎞️

There’s nothing quite like seeing true artistry at work — no AI-generated renderings, just the real thing.

And a little piece of cinema history made an appearance: this backing was originally painted for Kill Bill Vol. 2. 🖌️

finally some GQ behind the scenes production stills. no AI was used, just good old fashion movie magic - a brilliant team of technicians & craftsmen constructed and lit this set. taking cues from the history of Hollywood movie making, i used in-camera techniques same as they would have 100 years ago, 50 years ago, or even in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming new film The Odyssey. as you can imagine the cast were each as charming as ever to work with

I ain't lost, I'm just wandering… We never get tired of watching Adele's video especially since it features our painted backings as they move around her and fly in and out of the shots! It's from her mega-hit "Hometown Glory" from her debut album "19". Apparently neither does anyone else. It's racked up more than 169 million views since it premiered in 2009.
