We teach children about the Harlem Renaissance. About the cultural movements that shaped this country.

But the music that narrated all of it, invented here and born from the specific experience of Black Americans, gets filed under "elective".

Jazz is not optional history. It is the sound of American history being made in real time, in rooms that weren't allowed to exist in other buildings.

JEXA exists for every young musician who found it anyway. In spite of a system that treated it as extra credit.

We think that should change. We suspect a lot of you do too.

Some of the most unforgettable moments in jazz were never planned.

An unconventional melody.
An experiment with rhythm.
An attempt that started with hesitation and turned into inspiration.

When Miles Davis stated that "do not be afraid of mistakes; There are none," he did not mean that perfection did not matter. This statement means that we should keep on trying when we face uncertainty because it is there that we start growing.

Jazz teaches the musicians how to listen, adapt and trust themselves during performance. Sometimes what can seem to be a mistake becomes something totally new.

Perhaps that's one of jazz's greatest lessons not just for musicians, but for all of us.

Progress doesn't come from avoiding mistakes.

It comes from having the courage to keep playing.

He played a bass clarinet like it was a human voice.

Eric Dolphy didn't follow jazz's rules; he rewrote what the instruments were allowed to say. Critics didn't understand him in 1964. Musicians never stopped studying him.

He died at 36. His influence didn't.

Today, we celebrate a musician whose curiosity and creativity continue to inspire artists to explore, experiment, and trust their own voice.

At JEXA, we believe the future of jazz depends on young musicians who are willing to listen deeply, think differently, and create something uniquely their own.

Because every great innovation begins with someone willing to explore beyond what's familiar.

For a young musician, equipment is never just something to own. It becomes part of the daily work: the practice, the discipline, the listening, the confidence, and the sound they are slowly learning to shape.

Jazz grows in rooms like this before it ever reaches a stage. It grows when students are given real tools, steady encouragement, and a community that believes their music is worth investing in.
