Night Witches

Night Witches "Night Witches" is the incredible true story of the all female Soviet 46th Guards Night Bomber Regiment.

This page follows the creative process of "Night Witches" from their Residency at Ground Rush Farm (Phase 1) to their current Fall Tour (Phase 2). During the winter of 1943 on the eastern front, the Soviet 588th Night Bomber Regiment, later known as the 46th Guards Night Bomber Regiment, began it's combat missions against invading N**i troops. Their planes, normally used for cropdusting, were suit

ed to drop bombs under the cover of night. They would fly to a high altitude, turn off their engines, and glide silently over their target, dropping the bombs onto the unsuspecting men below. This unit, from the pilots to the navigators to the engineers to the mechanics to the commanders, was entirely female. The "whooshing" sound of them gliding over before releasing their bombs earned them the name, "Nacthexen" (Night Witches) by their enemies. Their story is one of courage, resourcefulness, and sisterhood. This page follows the current creative process of "Night Witches".

Accountability Statement from “Night Witches” using the accountability template from “We See You White American Theatre”
I, Elena Kritter, Executive Producer of Night Witches and owner of Ground Rush Productions, share this letter because I have supported white fragility and white supremacy in the creative and production process of “Night Witches”.
I have been seen doing so by the community of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) theatre makers and I see myself and my actions in this letter.
I share this to amplify the voices of BIPOC artists and administrators in our field and to hold myself accountable for my actions.
“Night Witches” is not exclusive to white theatre makers, and I am sorry for allowing, and thus supporting, a professional environment where BIPOC theatre makers felt unwelcome, unsafe, and dismissed.
This ends today. I promise to dismantle and eradicate white fragility and white supremacy in the creative and production process of “Night Witches”, and all future productions and produced by Ground Rush Productions. I promise to do better, with active inclusion of BIPOC voices, and ethical remuneration for all collaborators in front of and behind the table. I promise to continually unlearn systems of oppression within myself, and to always, always, listen.

✨Big news! ✨This past week, thanks to generous support from the Paul Green Foundation, Elena Kritter gave a presentation about at the 56th National Conference of Outdoor Theatre, hosted by the South Eastern Theatre Conference at the Santa Fe Opera.
✈️
The session, entitled “Night Witches: A Practical Examination of Community Engagement and Impact”, was brought to the conference to introduce our non-traditional method of creating new work in outdoor spaces (in our case - with 7 women and an airplane hangar!) to theatre makers across the country.
🛩
The session also looked at the immense and diverse community support that made “Night Witches” possible, and the impact the story had upon the Culpeper, VA community.
🔹
The dialogue that followed in the room was inspiring and invirgorating. Attendees discussed how they could use the various parts of the “Night Witches” model in their own communities, and also offered wonderful pragmatic advice to Elena on the next steps of production.
🛫
On behalf of the “Night Witches” team, we thank you for the opportunity to share our story at this level.

In the skies over N**i Germany, Soviet women turned rickety crop-dusters into killing machines.
