Three Houses by Dave Malloy is a take on the Three Little Pigs, if you made them human and plopped them into a purgatorial karaoke bar.  And there is no Three Little Pigs without a Wolf. 

“Dance with the wolf. Scratch his chinny chin chin.”

The Wolf is a bit of a ferryman, guiding each of the pigs through an open mic confessional at the end of the world.  His intentions are unknowable, but he sure does make a great whiskey sour.  

“Because this is who you are.  It will never go away.”

Three Houses takes on the wolf and the three little pigs in the world of the 2020 pandemic, and if that doesn’t sound like a Dave Malloy show, I don’t know what does. 

“And if I can shut the door, I won’t feel like this anymore.”

The final vignette takes a look at the life of Beckett, who just got a divorce from his wife and has moved into an apartment in Brooklyn.  Overlooking a graveyard.  In the basement of a butcher shop.  His fear of the outside grows quickly, as the wolf circles his den to try to find a way in.  He takes a page out of his grandfather’s book and builds an Irish clochán out of Amazon boxes to isolate and protect himself from the dangers of the world. 

“A house made of stone where I can’t hurt anyone.  A house made of stone where I can’t be hurt.”

Three Houses is a take on the three little pigs, in contemporary times.  And when we say contemporary times, we really mean March 2020.  

“My heart broke, and then the world broke, and then my brain broke too.”

The second vignette takes a look at Sadie, who moved to her aunt’s house in New Mexico after she and her girlfriend broke up.  When faced with nothing to do, she became immersed in an unnamed video game that mightily resembles Animal Crossing, where she painstakingly recreates her grandparent’s house in game.  It is after many weeks of sinking her time into the game that she realizes that she perhaps has an addictive personality, stemming from her love of arcades and quarter pushers.  Who knew?  

“See, there’s this clicking in my head when certain things line up and like is put with like.  And there is order.”

Three Houses by Dave Malloy is a take on the parable of the Three Little pigs, through the lens of…the pandemic…  Come along with us, it’s weird and cool and wonderful.  

“And I am so  happy right now.  I know that I shouldn’t be happy but I am so happy right now.”

The first vignette is that of Susan, sheltering in her grandmother’s home in Latvia after her recent divorce from her husband.  Isolation looks good on her, as she sweeps through her days writing, reading, listening to music, talking to her grandmother’s belongings, smoking w**d, and drinking.  Isolation looks good on her, that is, until it doesn’t.  She is sent on an inebriated mystical journey through her family history to find herself, though we wonder if she made it out the other side.  

“I think maybe I’m not the hero of this story.  I think maybe I’m the wolf.”
