Founded by Rita Mustaphi in 1987, Katha Dance Theatre (KDT) is a Minnesota-based dance company and school rooted in Kathak, the North Indian classical dance form. Kathak is an ancient dance form characterized by rhythmic footwork, graceful hand gestures, pirouettes, lyrical movements, and storytelling. KDT’s repertory strives to modernize and diversify Kathak in ways that make it relevant and incl

usive while still maintaining its cultural integrity. Students receive well rounded Kathak education that offers cultural and historical context for the art form, promotes technical precision, and encourages artistic expression in the classroom. In addition to performances and education, KDT’s programs include touring and outreach opportunities specifically tailored to suit the needs of individual communities. These programs deepen audiences’ connection to the material, helping KDT more effectively fulfill its mission to make Kathak universally accessible. Outreach programming options include master classes, lectures/demonstrations, residencies and workshops in dance or folk art.

Our first Vasantotsav! It was such a beautiful night, full of creativity, sisterhood and community. We're so proud of our amazing company and apprentice dancers, and of our choreographers: Sarika Haris, Rupa Nair, Aaratrika Mondal and Shilpi Chatterjee. Thank you to our volunteers and to everyone who attended the show--we're so grateful for your support and enthusiasm. Congratulations to KDT's fearless leader, Rita Mustaphi, for making this all possible.

The program begins with selections from “Kathak E-motion,” followed by the premiere of "Ritu Ranga": the first production in the history of KDT to be choreographed solely by KDT Company members (Sarika Haris, Rupa Nair, Shilpi Chatterjee and Aaratrika Mondal).

Curious about trying Kathak but haven't made the leap? Our Summer session is open to brand new beginners! Come learn the basics of Kathak in a welcoming and supportive environment. Students are welcome to learn in-person at our St. Louis Park studio or virtually via Zoom. No prior dance experience is required.

Classes will take place on Tuesday evenings from June 9 through July 28 (eight weeks). Class times are as follows:

Children (ages 6-12): 6:45 to 7:45 pm CT
Youth/Adults (ages 13+): 7:45 to 8:45 pm CT
Tuition Price: $238
Teacher: Shilpi Chatterjee
