Finally getting the chance to post the photos..Before and After.
Framing needs updating, just as a car, phone, furniture etc! Especially after 100+ years..
I recently had the pleasure, and honor of doing the restoration & custom framing for several very unique pieces circa 1800's.
Amazing to see how things were framed back in the day, and matted! The mattes were homemade, with masonite board of sorts, paper, and hand embossed on the front. Incredible. (photos coming soon)
Very sad ACID FREE anything was non-existent back then. Over the years the discoloration is problematic, and artwork also becomes brittle, I was able to save the priceless works of art, and restore the frames to almost look original! What a treat.
Saving the original wavy glass was one of my main priorities. The fella that brought the wonderful etching, and lithographs to me, had no idea what he actually had. I've never seen etchings so large, and beautifully detailed. Hand forged nails. I salvaged a few for my keeping. Jaw dropping to say the least. Absolutely had to call my dad to take a look!
Super fun stuff, but I'm whipped! A few solids days of framing.. been a while. but a nice change of pace. Off they went today, and will travel to Florida. Hoping they make it there safely. Precious cargo ...
If you have anything of importance, and wish to preserve it, I beg you..please do not use paper mattes, masking tape, scotch tape , duct tape etc. Acid free mattes, foam , tape and UV glass should be seriously considered if you want your special items to last. It doesn't' take long for materials to deteriorate. I've been custom framing just about anything you can think of ( hence the name YOU NAME IT - WE FRAME IT) for the last 20 years.. I've' had things literally crumble in my hands due to improper framing and preserving.
Don't wait! Protect and Preserve your special items today!
